Try some Neverdull on the rust....can get it at walmart for around $5 a can

 

Nice bike. I sat on a new one back in 06 and i wished i had bought it. That 1 year bike is my fav of the heritage softails.

 

Is there a good way to clean the hubs and upper parts of the spokes without taking the wheels off the bike? Hoping someone has a great idea for this to save me a lot of headache.

 

Wide athletic shoe laces with your cleaner on them then just pull up and down the spokes. For the hubs strips of an old tee shirt with the cleaner threaded into the hub and same back and forth sawing motion. Time consuming, but it works.

 

good idea...thanks. I was thinking of trying my Mothers ball but figured I would not get the right angles needed.

 

Looks good. I bought my used '06 FLSTi in 20010 with 2000 miles on it and have been delighted with it. Three key things I did for appearance were to:
1) Move the turn signals off the bars and onto the lower bolt that holds on the windscreen
2) Ran all the handlebar wires internal in the bars
3) Replaced the cables/lines with platinum braided stainless. This coupled with #2 really cleans up the part of the bike that you look at while riding.

I added the chrome lowers (fangs?) to stop the buffeting that was coming up under the windscreen.

I also put on a Mustang seat to save my tired butt on long rides.

I have ridden about 8000-12,000 miles per year on it for the last three years including 2500 mile trips last summer and this summer.

Awesome Vinish. What kinda mileage you getting? not that it really matters a lot LOL but curious. She wants to leave it stock, well except the stage 1 and the V and H longshots that came on it.

 

My mileage depends, of course, on my riding location, speed, and style. On the highway at 80 mph I get about 41-42 mpg. At 55 on flat ground, I get 45-46 mpg. Around the city with a heavy throttle hand, down to 38-39 mpg.

Whereabouts in NC are you from? Hopefully the western part where you can really enjoy the great riding in the mountains. My wife and I are flying to Cary, NC for Labor Day to visit our 5-month old twin granddaughters. Last year, I took a 2500 mile, 10 state, 8 day trip that included the BRP and many of the famous motorcycle roads in west NC.

Well, that is still a LOT closer to the fun mountain riding than me. Enjoy your FLSTi. There aren't many of them around. I have done a lot of work to mine but nothing engine or tranny related so please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

The turn signal relocation, chrome fang lowers, platinum braided stainless lines, and internally wired bars were all done by me and not by a dealer. In fact, I've never had the bike to the dealer and do all my own maintenance.

I've ridden this bike for about 28,000 miles now without any problems.
