NOOB oil tank & battery tray question.

Ha! I work with someone who bought a new XLH in the 70s and he told me what you just told me pretty much word for word.

[QUOTE=purelife70;19684429]Not yet but I did find some on J&P cycles and denniskirk.
Might be less $ to use the setup you have now if the swingarm will mate to your frame
That wheel will require a new brake pedal / brake cable / actuator rod/ stop switch / axle etc
small bits & pieces add up fast

Too late :-)
I got all of that from the same guy I bought the frame, all I need now is the rear wheel.
It would also mean that I would have to transfer the brakes pedal from right to left and that's not how the 76s were built (I think)...the safety guys may not like that.
I best keep it "original".

Ohh, I didn't think about the axle....I'll have to look that up.

you are half correct , 75 and up is left shift and right brake BUT the r.h. Drum brake / sprocket combination wheel was used with BOTH pedal configurations until the upgrade of rear disc in 79
exception is 77 & 78 XLCR which had square tube and disc brake
this is why I suspect you MIGHT save $ by using the swing arm and wheel you have and running
A hydraulic line
I suggest checking the fit of late swing arm to early frame
By the way, replacing swingarm bearings can be a tedious pain in the rear
there’s the pivot pin , 2 very funky nuts , bearings , bearing races and dust covers
take your time, too loose and it will walk in turns.
too tight and it will ride hard and put valleys in the races

Received and understood.
One thing to consider is that if I use hydraulics and it does not pass safety, I have to switch from right to left again.
But I will try to fit the 79 swingarm to the 76 frame this weekend. The rear end of the frames look very similar, I would not be surprised if it would fit.
I was going to sell the rear end, do you suggest I keep it for later disk brake mods after I pass safety?

Ok I will,
If I move the break pedal to the left it does make it easier for a right side jokey shift :-)
I will take it all apart again after safety to powder coat the frame and everything else that requires it.

Thx I read it about 5 or 6 times, I'm sure I'll come back to read this again after my 2nd or 3rd try setting up my swingarm bearings :-)
