Default Difference between spring shock 54484-97 and 54485-97

Hi.
I have Softail Crossbones. I need to change front shock, according to parts catalog it uses 54484-97, but Softail Springer uses 54485-97. It seems it is the same shock.
I am able to get 54485-97 but not sure if it will fit my Crossbones.
Any help to be sure about fitment it is appreciated.
Thank you

Superseded number more than likely. The last one I replaced was the 84-97 number if I’m remembering correct.

I have to wonder if one of these two numbers is for the 'fat front tire' Springer while the other is for your bike and the non-Crossbones Springers with the 21" front wheel. How to confirm what's going on is the question. Any chance you can talk to an HD parts desk?

Default Did you find a solution?

I have a 1993 FXST, so standard springer. The new part number is 54485-97, with the part you have as 54484-97, which has a heavier dampening. Did you figure out of it was a significant difference or of they are relatively interchangeable?

This! It is my understanding that the one with the decal is for the 21" wheel. The one without the decal is for the fat tire'd Classic springer. They are valved differently. Also, I believe the Classic one has a nub at the top, whereas the FX-style does not. Good way to tell them apart if someone removes the decal. When it comes to the Crossbones, here's the part number and exploded view to show the current part #.

So my question would be are they relatively interchangeable? I understand that the valving is different but will that effect the handling significantly. I have a FXFTS, forgot the last S on my last post. If I put a stuffer shock on it will there be a significant change? Problem is the heater shock is more available.

I can only state from my point of reference of my Springer Classic (fat tire). They are set up pretty stiff, but how much of that is determined by the shock, I don't know. I've never been held subject to the parts number books, so you may prefer the way the bike handles with a different shock. The only downside is the cost of finding just the right one. Know anyone nearby that would let you borrow their shock for a bit? If not, perhaps checking lengths online might be your only other resource. Perhaps a cheaper alternative?

Just like our engines (Fuel, Air, Spark = BANG!) physics and personal preference trump part #s for me. If this wasn't true for much of the globe, no one would be modifying their HDs! Good luck with the search and I hope you find the perfect shock for YOU!
