Default how to determine max elec output

want to put some highter wattage bulbs on the bike - how can i figure how much elec i am using and if this additional need will tax the alternator too much

Get hold of a DC Amp Clamp and fasten it around either the main + 0r - lead. Doesn't really matter which one as the amp clamp will show either a + or a - reading.
Turn all the lights and any other accessories on and read the amperage draw off the meter.
Oh and make sure you zero the meter prior to start.

The reading you get should be the maximum that your system will require while running.

I would be more worried about overloading the wiring for your lights and melting the sockets than overloading your alternator.
