First thing it appears a older softial kit is on the bike With heavy rust in tank and thier is massive wiring cluster above reartire and chopped wires.

I'd get the H-D factory shop manual and an H-D parts book, too. A 1984 Ironhead will be either an XLH, XLS, or XLX. The engine serial number will tell you which it is. If the first two letters after 1HD1 are CA, it's an XLH. CB is an XLS, and CC is an XLX.

Default Yeah all started breaking down today

This is my 1st iron head. I have had couple of sporty in the past. But never to rebuild. My intention is to do off the frame rebiuld. Although motor appears to be storng there is some rust on the head fins and frame is in bad need of paint. She sat outr in the weather for a couple of years before I spotted her. Soo sad had to buy her up and turn into project. No bike deserves that. Does anyone have part number for harley for service manual? I have obtianed a good condition wiring harness. and a cylmer manual. It states almost a full engine tear down and trans tear down to remove motor. Has anyone removed engine with less work?
This is going to be some big project all help is welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

Essential HD manuals ...
99451-85A Parts Catalog XL Models 1979 to 1985
99484-85 Service Manual 1979 to 1985

Motor can, and usually is, removed from the frame with the rockers, heads, covers, cases, etc installed. Just remove the tank, coil, carb, etc etc. One of the usual techniques involves laying the bike on it's side, protected, then lifting off the frame. Others can provide more detail as i have not done this myself.

yep, all the guys are right, the engine comes out pretty easy. my trick is a harbor freight chain foil and any overhead support. i hook the foil to the heads to frame mount and it will lift out even with one person guiding it, goes in the same. have no fear about rebuilding it as it is pretty staight forward. you will need to factory manuel about 60 bucks. the only thorn is the special tools needed but if you are handy, most of the can be made at home. you did not specify the milage but do a rod shake to determine if the crank has to come out. if it does, now would be the time to rebush the cams while the cases are apart. i find if the iron head is taken care of, they will go way over 100k miles on the lower end. also, if the heads do not already have valve seats installed, do it now to take care of the unleaded fuel problem and valve recession. have fun and be patient and the rewards will be worth it.

Default New to the site.

I have an '84 sporty and i want to do a bobber style rebuild on the old girl. Im not the guy for flashy, as evidence of the bike being primarily black. The bike number is 92 off the line for that year and somebody to me that it was a "special edition" if it one of the first 100 made. ??????? Is this true? Do i not modify the frame to convert to a bobber? Is there a better frame to use? HELP> Where do i start?
