With car releases there are spy shots of the new models all over the internet. The production plans seem to always get 'leaked' by suppliers so enthusiasts know the release date, colors, option content, etc.
BMW motorcycles get the same treatment, in fact, most motorcycle manufacturers do. We knew about the new Goldwing with the DCT coming and had spy shots and detailed analysis.
Harley....nothing unless they release it and that PA photo spread was just tossed together. There are no spy shots, no production plans or figures, content, nothing. One day they will have an intro and they will roll out of the back room at your local dealer ready to go.
A good example is the new Softails...there were hints and rumors but nothing real substantial.
About the only real thing we heard about was the closing of the KC plant and I believe that was news from HD itself at an earnings call.

The Pan America, LiveWire, StreetFighter etc. are all brand new models, not affecting anything in dealer stock, so those can be discussed publicly before release and oftentimes will be discussed early, specifically for the purpose of freezing sales from competitors. There may be folks out there who were considering getting a BMW or KTM or something, but have decided to hold on to their money until they can see the Pan America. That helps Harley dealers.
Leaking information about upcoming changes to current models, on the other hand, hurts dealers' ability to move the stock they currently have on the showroom floor, so yes Harley is justifiably tight-lipped about what's coming. Who would buy a 2019 touring bike if they knew that the frame would be changed like the Softail frame for 2020? I know I wouldn't.

True,
But something huge like a Frame Change I would wait to see if it really was a better ride, and I'd wait for the 2nd model year to get the bugs worked out of it.
However if I knew all of the 107's would be upgraded to 114's for next years model I would hold off a few months and get the bigger motor. So yes leaking information on existing models can hurt dealers sales. But it may not. How many people rushed out and bought a new Dyna so they could get one of the last ones? There were Dyna's sitting on dealers floors for quite a while after the new Softail versions came out. I think it is kind of a crap shoot on what information is going to do to current sales.

At the dealer show last year, my buddy climbed over the little fence they had when no one was looking, and sat on it. He is going to the Dealer show next month and expects to see it there. I am still first on the list in his shop to get one that comes in the door... or second, if he wants it.

Spoke to the owner of my local dealership a few days ago and he said the Pan America will be a 2020 release, now whether it will be released in a few weeks at the dealer show or perhaps a mid year release in January we will have to wait and see.
Also noted in the Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal "Harley's middleweight models expected in 2020 are the Pan America 1250, its first adventure touring model and Streetfighter 975, a sleeker model. Another middleweight, the Custom 1250, was previously announced for a 2021 release."
