Steering head bearing lube and adjustment!

woohoo!

3 years, 15k miles since last done. Never going 25k again, so I’m doing every 15k. There was some grease still present, unlike the first 25k miles. Bearings and cups look good, not signs of wear.

good plan, I've found that mine benefitted from service every 20K over the years, which is a little over annually on average

I’ll be doing the swing test tomorrow to get the bearings set to spec.

Before tearing down today I did a quick swing test to see where it was at. It was too loose. I started to notice some wobbliness in high speed so I wanted to tighten that up. Just so happens I’m due for lube.

I’ll start checking bearing adjustment every 10k and lube every 20k.

You have inspired me!

What grease did you go with?

Finished my swing test and steering head bearing adjustment after lubing them.

I should have read my notes from last time…
  • TINY increments when tightening/loosening
  • loose is tight, tight is loose (turning the stem from the bottom)
  • You’re not trying to swing across the center, you need it to stop before center

Quick test ride proved the adjustment is good. Feeling solid again. No more high speed wobble.

Ready for this?? … HD’s Special Purpose Grease… GASP!

This is what the SM calls for and I liked the way it looked after 3 years, 20k. It’s doing a fine job, so why change.

When I first did the job years ago, there was no grease left…

1.5” tank lift added. Hoping I can tell a difference in bufetting as well as temp reduction. Not different enough visually to tell.
