Sounds right to me Webby , I just dialled in to this thread as I'm trying to get away with an air filter on the cheap with out a tune but if it's a no go I will get a tune.
I will however wrap the exhaust headers I've found this to be a bit of a bonus for exhaust scavenging and heat management.

I like what I'm feeling with my K&N and an FP3. I don't have an exhaust upgrade yet and I still feel an improvement.

My service manager told me a filter only did not require a tuner but go with slip on SE mufflers required their tuner

If you have an open exhaust and add the filter you will need to adjust the baseline tune. You can do it yourself with the SE tuner. My bike pinged like crazy while I was waiting on the tuner cables when I made the change.

If you order from TAB performance you don't have to wait for them to get them in. They have them in stock.

I think there's a lot of mythology and bad information, even from Harley techs, if you can imagine that.

The bike has sensors, the sole purpose of it is to adjust. Mufflers and a new air filter dont represent that large of a change.

there's some truth to that within reason..adding the K&N OEM 1717 replacement should be just fine..when you think about it..there's probably a significant difference in air flow between a new clean filter and one approaching its service need so of course there's some ability to adjust..However, I don't personally believe it's wise at all to add less restrictive exhaust coupled with increased intake, you risk exceeding threshold of safe engine operation.

so you either trust HD or you subscribe to the FOS conspiracy theory that they just want to sell you more unnecessary products.

I subscribe to the former rather than latter mindset of;

ECM requires recalibration when adding performance parts or engine damage can occur

guess it's an individual risk vs reward tolerance of playing it safe and spending the money or roll the dice..frankly it amazes me how some will balk at spending a few hundred bucks to follow the instructions but won't blink an eye at spending the same amount on a piece of bling..we spend 20, 30, even 40 K on these bikes, don't see what the big deal is going by the book

I thought I might relate my experience with K&N filter on my '17 Ultra. After the thousand mile service I added the 1717 to the stock can and a set of take-off CVO Ultra mufflers. The sound is a touch different, not louder just different. There is no decal pop or accel dips, just runs very well. At my age I doubt there is any more for me to do on this bike. I like it as is.
