Stone - please PM me your PayPal address. I'd like to make a donation to the cause. I've got a good wrenching background but this machining stuff is way above my head. The work that you and Steve have done is above commendable while H-D sits around with a team of engineers with limitless resources that can't solve this.

Your efforts are much appreciated.

I honestly think the engineered have came up with fixes, probably all denied by the bean counters wanting a, cheaper fix.

Wouldn't surprise me at all.

WAY more elegant than anything the MoCo will EVER come up with.

Congrats, and I hope it works!

Save your money to fix or modify your bike. Most of this stuff I consider entertainment, I like doing it. It's actually cheaper than a lot of hobbies and it keeps my mind working.

I expect no more than 0.001" runout from you and for you to deliver it in 2 weeks for the cam testing. Since your just down the road a little should be no big deal

I would like to offer a little more insight . Because of thread tolerances there is a need to fit a nut or adapter with a snug thread to fit whatever the measured thread on the shaft was .Once the thread fit was determined, a part could be made so that the thread ( with the required dimensions for a snug fit ) could be turned or hardened and ground so the seal had the require running finish and all other faces of the nut or adapter were concentric .There should be little run-out on a shaft that close to the bearing so that shouldn't be a concern.I don't know why Harley didn't use a sealed bearing there, unless there was concern of a vacuum buildup in the primary and left the bearing open for a greater balance for pressure between the primary and the transmission. The primary vent hole ,and a seal to the bearing were excellent observations .

I ordered the nuts last night.. McMaster says they'll be here today.. When I cut the nuts, they will be done on a single point threaded mandrill that is first cut and not removed from the lathe. This means that that threads on the mandrill are exactly on center, 0 run-out.. The thing is that we don't know how straight the threads are cut on the ends of the shafts in the tranny.. They are probably cut before heat treat so they might be off a little.. Anyways we'll see how close I can get.

You may need to face the nut before hand, so keep the mandrel short enough so you can. Seen way to many nuts that are not square to the threads. You may also want to cut the thread a little to the large size on the mandrel and adjust to fit what the nuts are. While that does not do anything for what HD may or maynot have done on the mainshaft it will help keep things square and true when cutting the nuts. The other thing that may happen is that the nut distorts some when torqued in place. I would want to make sure and torque the nuts onto the mandrel shaft at or near the final torque value prior to cutting.
