The M8s have filter boxes that are inside the rocker cover.

Oil will still make it past the filter, you just don't notice it on other bikes/cars since its all hidden in an airbox.

If I vent to atmosphere, will those carbon deposits be reduced over time running good quality gas and adding fuel system cleaner? I realize there will always be some carbon.

Until my M8 goes out of warranty and I can convert breather system,I have been using a top engine cleaner additive in gasoline. Top of pistons look great at 6,000 miles.

Captain Obvious checking in, but also believe the old addage of "blowing the carbon out" still applies with these, and need to wring them out often..sometimes we get lulled into infatuation with all the low and mid range torque and get lazy on the top..try to exclusively use Chevron as well, Techron is a proven additive

Assuming you meant you can’t convert breather system until end of warranty. If so, not necessarily true. You can direct breather snot into catch can inside AC housing. No need to drill hole in backplate.

Why not H20 injection?

Yes. Venting to an alternative source permanently eliminates additional carbon buildup, as long as good-quality fuel is used and the rings and valve seals are doing their job. You can get what remains out of there by using a good fuel cleaner (I prefer BG 44K).

You are correct, but always run the risk of carbon chunks getting caught between the valves and seats. Stopping it at the source is always a better solution.

The mod I made to my breather's been working great. It vents to a large container that lives in the stock are cleaner housing.. After close to 1,300 miles I got maybe 1/4 oz of mostly water with some oil mixed. This is a 2 ounce shotglass I poured it into.
However you vent it, IMO you just CAN'T let it go into the intake..
