Is My Bike Insurance Too High???

I have a '92 Dodge Dakota that I drive less than 100 miles a month with only collisions and liabilty. The Harley and Hayabusa are both fully insured but with a $1000 deductable.

My insurance bill from State Farm for all three is $150 a month. I have a perfect driving record and I'm 65. Any opinions? Is that about what it costs to insure a beat pickup and two bikes by an old fart?

Any comments really appreciated...

JOE33060 09-29-2010 05:41 PM

My Harley alone is 900.00 a year.

rdam 09-29-2010 05:56 PM

Can you break it down by vehicle?

I pay $450 a year for an '05 Electra Glide and an '06 Sportster. Progressive/Drive Insurance.

An '04 F-250, '10 Ranger, and 36' Toy Hauler cost a little over $1,400 a year

My guess is the 'Busa is A LOT higher than the others.

dstegjas 09-29-2010 06:27 PM

I pay $500 a year for full coverage, year round coverage including roadside coverage from Progressive. My bike is a 2004 Road King Custom.

Your price is going to vary a lot depending on your age, location, driving record and type/year of the bike. So it is tough to compare price on this stuff.

anickel 09-29-2010 06:27 PM

My 02 EG is 240 per year.

bjewell 09-29-2010 06:58 PM

I don't know how it breaks down. I know the Harley added $45 a month to my bill.

Ragtop 09-29-2010 07:05 PM

My 05 Roadking is $200/yr with progressive.
the 03 Deville is $350/yr.
99 Conversion van $325
64 Impala $325
House is the worst at $900
Good driving record, 57 yrs old. All full coverage.
Progressive goes down a lot each year you are a member.
It's easy to be insurance poor with a few toys.

stev0n 09-29-2010 07:05 PM

i have progressive with a clean record & all kinds of discounts. & i'm 25.

paid $120/yr for liability on my 78 goldwing.
I now pay $650/yr for full coverage & roadside & long distance trip assistance on my 08 superglide.

sr_smyth 09-29-2010 07:15 PM

99 Ultra -basic -crash and cry-650$ for 6 months-Provincial Gov't insurance (mandatory) add 6 months Comprehensive which flips over to 6 months storage from a private carrier-add another 850$ for the year-riding since 1979, not once accident and one speeding ticket in 25 years-count yer blessings

MB-WideGlide 09-29-2010 07:23 PM

You guys have it good in the USA,. I'm 48 perfect driving record no points at all ,my 2010 Wide Glide is $1700.00 for the year. here in Manitoba Canada

barjbar 09-29-2010 07:56 PM

Except one guy lives in Ohio, one in Kentucky, one in British Columbia, and I live in Michigan and every state's insurance laws and minimum coverages are different. Michigan has unlimited medical coverage, Kentucky has no minimum (I think) so you can't compare from different states you can only compare with others in California. Last I heard, rates in California are among the highest in the nation. The biggest rating factor now is credit scoring. Having a good credit rating can reduce your rates by 50% or more (at least here in Michigan).

wideglidebob 09-29-2010 07:57 PM

i have my 05 wideglide ins for 25000, if it is stolen or wrecked i get a check for 25000, its like a custom old car, it cost me 611 a year, includes ins, body ect its allstate car is 800 a year for new 750 bmw (car) and 500 per yr home

Check with Markell insurance. I have gotten the lowest rates from them.

Not wishing to hijack this at all, but I can't help but wonder if you "way up north riders" need to carry insurance a full 12 months out of the year if you can only ride say 7 months?

CheezyRiderAZ 09-29-2010 09:48 PM

I've had State Farm on all my vehicles and house for 27 years.
Not sure just what the breakdown is on my vehicles moneywise, but I've done the "free quote" thing a number of times over the years with other insurance companies.
Very few contact me later with a quote and the ones that do, all wanna change something- higher deductible, different coverage, whatever.
This tells me they can't match or better what I already have.
Just my opinion...

oct1949 09-29-2010 10:14 PM

I am over 60 and to me thats high

KBFXDLI 09-29-2010 10:42 PM

State Farm $312/yr for full coverage 100,000/300,000 w 1000 deductable and they cover all mods. I'm 57 and never a chargeable accident in my life. Plus I have had my MC endorsement for 36 years and have taken 3 safety courses.

dope_man_21 09-29-2010 11:00 PM

Mine was $27 a month ($324 a year) on my 2007 FXDSE before State Farm found out about a couple of tickets I have received in the past two years, it is now right at $80 a month ($960 a year) what a difference two tickets make. the first one was for improper passing (Accident involved) and the second one was a speeding ticket 72 in a 55 (construction zone).

:eek::eek::eek:
Holy crap! What kind of coverage is that? Full, including theft or liability only? Here in Japan I pay about $265 a year for liability only. I figure if dump it and it is my fault, I deserve to pay what it costs me to fix my bike. I also don't have theft insurance, because there have been no recorded thefts of H-Ds in my prefecture and Japan in general has a very low theft rate, except in Tokyo. If I had full coverage including theft, however, I'd be paying about what you are.

Elgin47 09-29-2010 11:37 PM

2009 FLHTC, full coverage policy including $250/Comp and $500/Collision deductibles - 63 yrs. old, clean driving record:

Safeco - $904/yr.
Geico - $493/yr.

sr_smyth 09-30-2010 12:33 AM

Crazy E BFMC 71 09-30-2010 01:45 AM

Kirk65 09-30-2010 01:49 AM

I pay 184 a year through Progressive on a 2001 883. 100 Comp and 500 collision deductibles. 959 a year through AAA on a 99 Chevy truck full coverage and sons 1975 Chevy Malibu liability. and rental. 425 on the house through AAA. I just switched from Country Company and saved 750 a year on everything. Needless to say, am pretty pleased.

Earl IV 09-30-2010 02:08 AM

My 2010 FLSTFB is $380/yr - full coverage w/$500 deductible.

My Hondas run about $75/yr each for liability only.

The bikes are with Progressive

My 2007 Ford SuperDuty is $800/yr - full coverage w/$1000 deductible

It's with State Farm

Ole Coyote 09-30-2010 07:14 AM

I have State Farm and pay $2,500.00 a year for 2 Hummers, GMC Envoy, 51 Chevy PU street rod and my 08 H-D ($240 a yr). That seems like a lot of money when you total it up.

Insurance on my ironhead is $40 a year. When I renewed it last time, I asked the girl what we could do to lower the cost. She said "Sir, I'm sorry but there is a minimum charge that we have to make".

Vigorously maintaining my image as a cheap bastard.

FATKEVIN 09-30-2010 08:03 AM

09 Fat Bob $377 a year. I switched from State Farm to Farmers about three months ago and saved about $80 on the bike and a little over $500 on everything, (house, 2 cars, bike). It seemed like State farm just kept raising their rates. That price is actually with raising the bodily injury from 100/300 to 250/500 which was the only change the farmers agent recommended.

GeezerDude 09-30-2010 08:54 AM

It's my understanding you should shop your motorcycle insurance around every renewal period. It falls under recreational vehicles. In Texas these are regulated, and for an insurance company to offer them at all, they need issue a certain number of policies. This means from one year to the next certain insurers may be trying to "make quota" so might offer you a very good deal.

I live in Texas and mine is $400 year for my dyna. This is my first bike, my first year, took the MSF course and I'm 43.

CroFromGuntown 09-30-2010 09:47 AM

I switched to Rider this year and pay 220 for my 05 Road King for the year. I was paying over 600/ yr with my previous company.

Jonesee 09-30-2010 09:55 AM

My motorcycle insurance is about $300.00 per year. I keep is seperate from the cars because:

I have 3 sons (16, 18 and 22)and 5 cars/trucks. Insurance on all that is riduculous.

pretz 09-30-2010 09:58 AM

Try USAA for your truck and they will direct you Gieco for the bike and other insurance companies have a difficult time betting their rate.

Not to be a smart a** but have you looked in AARP for insurance?

bjewell 09-30-2010 10:01 AM

Thanks! I should check out AARP, afterall I've EARNED it! ;- )

I know a few seniors who take offense to AARP like it admits your a senior and will have nothing to do with the organization. I am only 47 and when it's my turn I will use what they have to offer (as long as they bet other offers).

TreyParrish 09-30-2010 06:54 PM

If your current or former military USAA is always the cheapest on insurance. You have to be a vet to get it. That being said they don't offer motorcycle insurance, but will save you $$$ on the truck, car, house that sort of thing. They do offer a refferal to progressive I think that gets you a few extra discounts. However Geico also offers an incentive discount to government employees and for my motorcycles they have been more competitive. I am 31 though so still in a sort of high risk bracket but my insurance for two motorcyles a 1980 yahmaha xj and a 2010 electra glide ultra classic is around $800.00 a year That's full coverage roadside assistance, medical, bodily harm the works. I think I do get a discount for being a government employee (Geico stands for Government employee insurance company) and I get one for the security system and a safety course as well.

madmike1960 09-30-2010 07:24 PM

Foremost Ins. in North Jersey

I pay $390 a year for full coverage on an 06 Dyna Super. Have to buy 12 month policy these days. Bring back the good times of the eighties when you only needed 6 months coverage. Vehicle tag cost $65 a year now, double from the year before.

rodney123456 10-01-2010 07:46 PM

maxhd 10-02-2010 10:11 PM
