High capacity oil pan
Hello Everyone,
New member here. Looking for some feedback on a Screaming Eagle high capacity oil pan. Part #24400088. Sold as a 5 1/2 qt pan. It was installed a by dealership and they put 5 qts of oil in per the work order.
I just changed oil and filter for first time and was only able to put the std 4 qts in and it shows full after warm up.
Anybody have one of these pans? Dealership and Harley customer care have no clue or explanation. This is on a 2014 FLHXS.

While your pan is described as being 5 1/2 qts, having been filled with that much while new and bone dry, you won't get all the oil out of an engine at oil change time. I must say however that I would expect to get more than 4 qts! If you are doing your own servicing and don't have one yet, do get yourself a factory service manual. That will give you dry and wet fill capacities. Routine services are wet fills, when a significant amount of oil is held back inside the engine, trans or primary.
Hope that helps! I don't see too much of a problem personally. You may get more oil out next time by setting the bike so the drain plug is in the best position.

Oil pan
Thanks for the reply. I understand that there is some residual oil in the engine but a quart and a half doesn't seem likely. On the eagle pan the drain is in rear left corner which is the lowest point when the bike is on the kick stand. I'm assuming the factory dip stick is accurate with this oil pan. For 800.00 installed, I thought I was getting a higher capacity pan. Oh well....

Added one when switched to 120 engine. My dyno guy did first change after break in/dyno so I can't speak to volume but can say for sure that thee are 2 drain plugs - the angled one on the back left that you mentioned and another one slightly farther forward and towards the right side (not mounted at an angle like the one you found).

Thank you Roadie13! I looked the pan over and missed it since it is recessed in the pan and located under the frame cross member with a small cut out for access. The pan was already installed when I bought the bike so I didn't get any paperwork on the pan. What's surprising is the dealership had no clue (they installed it) and when I called Harley Customer Care they had no clue either.
Thanks again for responding.

You wont get all the oil out. You can jack up the back tire, jack up the front, lean the bike to the left and right and get most of it out. Look at the baffles in the pics of the directions. It better explains why all the oil in the pan just doesn't run to the drain plug.
The plug on the front really isn't a drain. It is where the temp bulb goes for oil temp gauge.

There are two drain plugs, items #8. I suspect the reason for them is that the pan is sectioned, to prevent all the oil surging forwards under braking. Hopefully in future you will get the extra oil out, more in line with expectations!

If you look at the instructions you posted above there are two plugs #8 in the underside of the pan, plus another #9 in the end, referred to in Instruction 7. But I'm happy to be put right, as I no longer own a twincam!
