All so confusing Primary and Transmission oil?
This week I have given much time to reading all the oil threads and now I am even more confused. I just need a simple answer and not a oil debate.
I have a 2017 Harley Street Bob. For engine oil I am going to use Mobil 1 V twin 20/50 or Redline 20/50 Motorcycle Oil.
Primary and Transmission, I am not real sure what to use except I have read that the Formula + Transmission and Primary works ok.
I also read that many guys just use the same in all 3 holes. But on the other hand I read that synthetic isn't recommended for the Primary.
What are you using in your Primary and Transmission?

Yea, oil debates are dull I've fooled around with all sorts of lubricants, and these are what I use and have great luck with.
Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 synthetic in the primary; it's JASO rated:
In the transmission I liked Redline w/shockproof but the Mobil 1 75W-140 synthetic has an even smoother feel:
Just throwing this out there; everyone defaults to 20W-50 in the engine but HD actually does recommend straight weight oils in hotter temperatures. I use Valvoline VR1 SAE 50. Once I relocate back home to Florida I'll use VR1 SAE 60 in the hotter months and go back to VR1 SAE 50 in the winter months...

HD F+ is outstanding. But if you choose any good 20/50 oil will work syn or not.
Your Primary don't care one way or another. High end GL5 syn gear lubes like Spectro 6 speed are great products , but they will not make your HD last 1 mile longer than F+
Many run M1 20/50 syn in all 3 with no problems buy it at Walmart under $10 a quart.
AMSOIL will be here any minute to tell you they are the best .

20/50 dino HD oil for me. Mostly because I get 3 years of free oil changes. They recommend it gets changed every 2500 on the engine.
Formula + in the primary and they put 85w140
in the trans. Sounds thick, but it really shifts great (quiet) and goes in gear easy.

Who is "they"?......HD does not specify changing any more often than syn......5000 for both.

I also have played with many oils over the years, this is what i settled on. Mobil1 v-twin 20-50 in the engine, mobile 1 racing 4t -10-40 in the primary and Redline with shockproof in the tranny. This all of course is all a matter of opinion ,what works for me may not work for you.One thing is for sure though,"pick a primary oil and stick with it".don't keep switching oils in the primary its not good for the clutch.any quality motorcycle oil will work in the primary, just make sure its rated "motorcycle" Don't let the price of some of these oils scare you,oil is cheap your engine, tranny and primary are not.

So after much research I have decided on the following:
Engine oil: Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50
Primary oil: Red Line V-Twin Primary Case Oil 42904
Transmission oil: Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof 42804.
Thank you to everyone that replied.

That was unwise! Much simpler to just read your FSM.
You just started yet another oil debate......
Like so many other things in life, you have to make your own decisions. Ride on.....
