Default Wow!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday the wife and I went to A.D. Farrows here in Columbus, OH to purchase some oil (6 qts synthetic)...filter (HD Chrome)...inspection and derby gaskets (I am doing a change-out). I also had the parts guy throw in the 3 o-rings for the drain plugs. Now, my Road King is the first HD I have owned...have had it for 2 months...bought it off a buddy at work who, at the time had two RK's...anyhow...he told me that he uses the HD synthetic...I said ok..I will continue to use that. He told me to be prepared for the price...of course I knew that....but damn...$102.00 for the items listed above....wow. So, tell me o wise ones......what is a better route to take, cost wise, but still have the "best" bang for the buck on these oil changes??

Now that I have the o-rings...I can take a measurement and get them here from work...that alone will save me $5+

I realize that everybody uses different products....but there has to be a happy medium.

Thanks
Jason

Yes kind of chokes you up doesn't it?. At least you are doing your own work, you probably saved another $100 or so there. I am comtemplating not changing the transmission or the primary every time I do the oil. Those always still look pretty good after 5000 miles and may go to every other time on those. Of course just wait until you need tires, that is also a shocker.

Cool

Welcome to the world of Harley. That cheap if you think that high. Dont even think of putting good oil in it. Mobil 1 or Amsoil even higher. Only way to go cheaper is to go with Rotella 15W40. And black filter.

You can easily cut that in half without compromising quality. For the motor, Mobil One 15w-50 synthetic in the auto section at Wallyworld. 5 qt container for around $25. But avoid cheap substitutes on the oil filter. Harley 5 micron filters are good. Black will save you $ and not show dirt.

Straight dino 10w-40 for the primary. Anything more is just wasted. A good synthetic 75w-90 for the tranny, change only every 20k.

Buy the HD filter from the dealer. Then go to autozone and get Mobil1Vtwin 20w50 for the engine ($9.95/qt) Mobil1Vtwin 10w40 for the primary and Mobil1 85w140 for the trans. Should be about $65 total for the oil.

BTW, you can run the M1 85w140 gear oil 15,000 miles in the trans. The other 2 holes can go 5000 with the synthetic.
