If you go to the Mobil 1 site and the Amsoil site, this is exactly what they both recommend: 20w-50 synthetic motor oil in all three locations.

Default Syn 3 all the way!!!

I have used Syn3 for years and never had and issue. Love the stuff, it goes in clean and comes out clean. I know alot of people dont like to use it in the six speed trans because of the 5th gear "wine" but that is due to the way the gears are cut not the oil your putting in it. I have tried differnt trans oils over the years and have not been really impressed with any of them.

After spending the better part of 3 sleepless hours reading this oil thread and my dog is better tan your dog discussions, I believe I have come full circle in my decision. First of all my newly purchased 2009 Dyna Glide only has 678 miles and still the original fluids. From the thread and from oil manufactures websites, I think I will run Mobil1 V-Twin 20W50 in the engine, tranny and primary holes. Simplicity

I emailed Exxon/Mobil yesterday asking for a recommendation for the primary and transmission as I intended to run M1 V-Twin 20W50 in the crank. On their website they recommened to a customer that it was OK to run it in all 3 holes in 2010. I received a DIFFERENT recommendation yesterday March 13, 2013 from them. Here is their reply:

To: sharpie@********.net

You can utilize the Mobil1 Racing 4T 10W40 for the primary and Mobil1 LS 75W90 gear lubricant for the transmission.

-- Thank you for choosing ExxonMobil products.
If you need further assistance, please contact ExxonMobil at 1-800-ASK-MOBIL

I would assume as the technology has changed so has their recommendation. I will run 4T in the primary and 75W90 in the tranny as they now recommend. Mobil1 products are readily available wherever I go and I just purchased 19 quarts of V-Twin at $7 per quart last week. Picked up a new HD filter funnel yesterday at the Bike week sale in Orlando HD factory store. Just getting ready for the first fluid change on the new to me Dyna.

"You can" is not a recommendation, only an allowance. The recommended oil by Mobil 1 and Amsoil (and I am sure others) is synthetic 20w-50 for crankcase, tranny, and primary. Your original instincts were correct! Ask Mobil 1, Amsoil, Castrol et. al. what they "recommend" and the answer always comes back the same: 20w-50 synthetic for all three. I would ask everyone to go to any of their websites to verify what I am telling you. Thanks.

I emailed Mobil 1 back asking why the difference now. Here is the email:

Sharpie,

The Mobil1 V-TWIN 20W50 can be utilized in all three holes, however we have seen excellent performance with my initial recommendation made below.

From what the last email said it is a Recommendation and provides Excellent Performance by using the 75W90 LS gear oil in the tranny and Racing 4T 10W40 in the Primary. I've got to change mine for the first time this weekend and will use the 3 different fluids as they recommend. There is the Toll free number and email address. Contact them and see if they give you the same recommendation.
