Default Shifter shaft oil seal

I have two seals one is metal od And the other is rubber od. Both are shift shaft seals. Which one al I suppose to use? I’ve checked the parts and service manuals and neither one says specifically which to use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you

If they are both the same size then it should not matter. However if the bore the seal fits into is not the smoothest or has a few nicks or whatever, then go with the rubber encased one. Otherwise again, it don't matter. Just a different style. I find the rubber encased ones are easier to install. Put scotch tape on the shaft splines and a little oil over the tape before you slide the seal over the shaft shaft splines so you don't damage the seal. YD
