Default shifter needs lots of movement to shift

My wifies 86 Sportie 883 just got a new set of forward controls.I have them set up properly (I think). Before that she had mids and you had to poke your foot thru and you'd almost be pointing straight at the ground during upshifting.
Now with the forwards the problem is more evident. Upshifting seems to require Waaayyyy to much movement before it will actually shift. I know i need to do a clutch adjustment but I dont see how this would affect the shifter movement. I'd say its in the area of 2 1/2 to 3" before it will shift.
I have the shifter set so it actually hits the highway peg going into first. So it's as low as it can get. Just seems to be too much play.
I know it's apples and oranges but my new 2008 doesn't have that sort of play.

Any ideas? Need moreinfo?

How bout a pic of your setup. HD or Aftermarket controls? 3 inches is a lot but not unusual travel for some forward controls, especially since your mids seemed to have a lot of play too. Need more info.

I included pictures in the first post. They are aftermarket. I dont really think that the controls are to blame. I was hoping that there was an adjustment that could be made to reduce the travel.

Sorry, didn't look close at the pics, the only way I can see to shorten the throw would be to use a heel lever off a bagger. It's shorter and would reduce the travel quite a bit. Might be worth a try to find one on eBay or here on the forum.

I have to imagine that any stock heel toe shifter should work? I mean the shift rod is the standard diameter even tho it is the aftermarket shift rod as part of the forward control set up. Anyone ever done this on an aftermarket kit? i think the maker is R/N
