I just installed a used main shaft and gears and counter shaft with gears in my 2006 Softail standard (5speed). First, second, third and fourth gears work great, but I can not get it to go into fifth gear, no matter how hard I pull. I had fifth gear and bearing pressed in by a shop, I pressed the shafts on to the trap door bearings myself. The problem seems to be with the shifter cam or fourth gear fork. I screwed something up but not sure what, anyone else made this mistake?

 

I would pull the trans top cover and take a look. Hopefully its a simple fix.

 

Is the bike running? How are you going about shifting the gears?

Rear wheel on the ground?

If not running, are you rocking the wheel back and forth to allow the gears to engage?

Are you actually watching the gears, or are you trying to make it shift 5 times...remember, it will only shift 4 times...

 

YES, bike is running, but will not go into fifth, 1st through 4th fine, then no fifth, shifter will move up, just nothing there. Looks like it is coming back apart if I can't see anything with cover removed.
