Hey guys ( 86 FLT w/70k), has anyone had a problem going from only 3rd to 4th gear?Finding a false neutral, replaced 4th gear shifter fork, better, but still not 100%.Sometimes goes right in, other times if I wait a second before throttle,it will go in.I also adjusted the pawl by the book.Seems like a lazy shift drum.Any thoughts? Thanks

No help here. I've had this problem since I bought my bike used in 2008. Helps a little with shifting at a higher rpm, but the false neural is still present. Nothing is broken, so I just live with it. When it won't shift, then I'll open her up. LOL..
Yep- happened on my 92 five speed. The dogs get a little worn on those gears- and she wont engage properly- or you gotta take a couple of stabs at it- usually ending up in fifth instead. Solved the problem with a full rebuild using andrews gears- baker shift drum- baker shift forks- baker anti overshift pawl. 10000 miles later- no missed shifts.
1 the 2 door bearings get loose and allow the shafts to independently walk back and forth - they make a hi performance bearing set its 3 pieces not one don't know if I have them in stock have not seen an evo for any kind of trans repairs in 3 or 4 years maybe longer
2 the baker shift lever fixes lots of things and the matching shift drum is all the rage - never had an issue in one bike we installed those two together again
3 we like the 75 / 140 syn gear oil bel ray red line amsoil all do a great job
I know they're a little pricey but the baker OD6 Rebuild kit is the way to go... Never missed a shift... Missed shift's at high rpm's can cause a lot of damage.. Pumped up lifters and floating valves are not a good thing... And to make it better I went with the N1 shift drum....
Hey John, I changed to a baker shifter pawl and thats when it all started acting up. Don't know if it was a coincidence . thanks
just so you know the difference - before baker had shift / drum issue we would swap out the bearings and spring - one spring is all they have and machine the end blocks flat - as well as set the end play on the drum so it was a bit deeper and cant float around --
baker seen the issue as a one sided drum is looking for a stall once it has some wear and use - so they have a spring on both sides apposed to one another and it fixes the one issue - they also machine the drum exact as the oem is mas produced some don't do it some do kind of thing with Harleys drum
