Drive sprocket change out 883 to 1200 Sportster

As for the Dakota Digital unit. I already bought one and installed it on my 2007 Sportster and it works just fine. I had to splice a wire or two but it works perfectly. That was four years ago and it works great. A 2005 should be the same. If the unit you want doesn't have the plug in ends that you need. NO BIG DEAL. Just cut the wires that go FROM the transmission TO the Speedometer and splice in the Dakota Digital unit. IT'S EASY TO DO. You can always pay someone to do it for you if you want but they will have to cut the same wires anyway. Your call to make. Good luck with your decision and rdie safe out there.

just put the 29 tooth on wifes sporty. cant wait till she trys it out! as for the belt, there was PLENTY of slack and I would be confident in going to the 30 tooth without a belt change. (stock for the 2005 883 was 28 tooth) My only suggestion is get the 1 7/8 socket and a impact gun or beater bar ahead of time! and remember, left handed thread! thanks all for the great post!! very helpful!

Thanks for all the tips here. I just installed the 30T on my '04 XL883 (1200 converted). I used an impact wrench with a 1-7/8" socket and the nut came right off. Installation was a breeze. I ordered the Dakota digital sim1, but had to change the connectors to fit the sporty connectors. I ordered them from deutschconnector.com. The part numbers were DTM06-3S-E004 and DTM04-3P-E004. I calibrated the speedometer easily. Just wanted to pass along the info.

I am converting my 2012 Iron to a 1200 this winter so I have been reading this thread (which has been very informative) in case I wish to change the gearing. I have been looking through my owners manual and it shows the Final drive pulleys exactly the same on the 883 and 1200. I thought I might have to change my front pulley to a 29 or 30 tooth but it says both 1200 and 883 have 68 and 29 tooth pulleys. The Difference seems to be at the primary drive which it lists at 34 and 57 for the 883 and 38 and 57 for the 1200.
Any one else familiar with these numbers are they correct and if so what adjustment to the pulleys needs to be made to make the gears a bit taller?

belt drive
Hey, I'm not sure exactly what year it fits, but a buddy of mine had an '08 1200 nightster that he bought an evolution inc. Primary conversion for...he bolted it up and never used it. Think he paid like $3000 for it, I did some work for him and he gave it to me as payment...looking for 1200. I'm in central jersey if you or anyone is inerested.

Hi All:
My pulley change experience.
I have a 2005 883L. Like was stated earlier, the primary side is lower ratio than a 1200 on 883's 2004 up. I put on a tach and found that at 70 mph I was running over 3700 rpm's. I found a 32 tooth pulley on Ebay and installed it. Now I run at about 3200 rpm's at 70 and my gas mileage is around 60 on the interstate! Driving around town isn't bad either because I'm only geared like a 1200 even though 32 tooth sounds scary!
The change took a little work, but I didn't have to change the belt.

I just changed my wife's 2011 Superlow to a 32T pulley from a 29T. I had to file down the bosses on the pulley cover and case, but it was well worth it. It is a completely different bike. She can cruise at 75 without her ears exploding. The bike still has plenty of pull off the line and around town. All in all one of the best mods I have ever done to bike.
Thought I should add that we are using the stock belt. Happy riding.
