An oil filter wrench is not essential. You can break the filter loose with a pair of channellock pliers.

Default Absolutely

I spent my "formative years" as a Navy Nuke in the 60's - 70's, so tech manuals were a way of life. Old habits die hard, and I get the shop manuals for all my machines.
So yeah, akways get the manual for your bike.

The transmission drain is up between the shocks. I'd suggest using a socket to do the initial half a turn or so, then use an allen wrench. The factory cinches up the plugs pretty tight and there is a risk of stripping the allen head in the plug. The plug is either 5/8" or 3/4" hex head, can't remember which. The transmission fill plug is 3/8" allen.

The drain plug for the crankcase is on the high side of the bike in the frame just by the shocks. Same plug as the transmission.

The primary is an allen bolt on the bottom of the outer primary case.

I'd suggest you get an service manual from the Harley shop. It is the best $50 you can spend there.

Hope this helps.

Bill, you were correct. I think it's to make it obvious that this screw is DIFFERENT (!) to keep boneheads like me from partly unbolting the primary cover. (No, I DIDN'T but it would be just like me....) lol.

Not essential, but the best $8 I ever spent. My filter was downright JAMMED. I think the previous owner either used a wrench to put it ON or was King Kong and put it on "finger tight"... Either way, I tried the channel locks. I put screws in it for leverage (JUST got the mess cleaned up recently from that adventure)... I beat holes in it and tried with a screwdriver...there just wasn't room on the Ultra. Only thing would take it off was the wrench properly slipped over the end of the filter.

Question What's the trick on the primary oil?

Okay, I give up. What's the trick on getting the fresh oil into the primary drive? A funnel wasn't going to cut it, no way. There just isn't room next to the clutch once the derby cover is off. I ended up grabbing Pretty Wife's turkey baster and trickling it in there. Took a long time but I got er done. How do you guys do it?

I'll check back later for answers. Right now I gotta head to the kitchen aids department to make a purchase for somebody....
