Yeah I'm at that point in life where roughing it is Motel 6, did my share of sleeping bags over the years.

Two trips to Sturgis; pretty much done with "destination" touring.
First order of the trip is to plan a route that avoids all freeways if possible. Then, do a little research on the remaining towns we're passing thru to see if there's anything interesting. Alternate routes are checked and rooms are booked for the following night over the phone so we can get there when we want, knowing we have a rack waiting...no camping. Also good to chat up the desk at our destination and get local intel. Use Butler maps. Have covered 30 states and 6 provinces with our formula. Miles per day? Not many... Interesting "contacts"? Many...
It's also nice that the wife rides her own bike, too.
