For a little variation: after leaving Hanksville, rather than riding over the top of Lake Powell, you can take a little detour off 95 and take 276 and ride to the lake and take a ferryboat across, and then link back up with 95 on the other side. It's kind of a kick to be riding across a lake on a ferryboat in the middle of the desert. You could then take 261 to 163 and head north from there. That brings you down the Moqui Dugway which is also a cool ride.

Good luck and enjoy.
I'm taking my boy on a trip in June that will take us through Halls Crossing via Hwy 12 -> 95. I can't wait to check out the ferry!

Its looks to be right at 1600 miles (plus the 1200 from Dallas to ABQ and back). We normally trailer then ride 3 days. This will be the first 5 day ride. I'm sure we'll be bickering like two old stinky women by the time it ends ! He's a crotchety old fart anyway.. ha We both retired last year so we'll see how long it takes to run each other off a mountain !

Funny how at the end of a long trip, you're ready to strangle your buddies but still look back on it as great memories. LOL

To ride on 12 you better not have vertigo... and you shouldn't be watching any of the scenery so buy a GoPro and check out the scenery when you get home... and be good at dodging RVs without getting near the right edge of the road because there isn't much of a right edge other than air.

12 looks like a great road ! (with maps street view anyway). After riding Million Dollar 2 years ago, didn't think I would have problems with Estes Park and RMNP last year at 14k feet. I was wrong.. at the top 14000 feet down with no rail and a straight drop off, I couldn't even look over the edge ! Stayed toward the yellow line.. ha

You're not joking. This will be my third time through 12 but first for my boy. I had a couple butt pucker moments my first time through. I was still getting used to the Breakout I had at the time. Not a good highway to be on when riding a bike that hates going anywhere but straight.

I've done it 4 times in the past 15 years. The first time I found it by accident, just checking out the lake. It's kind of a hoot.

June is the hottest month in AZ, if not the entire southwest. From late June through September we have the monsoon. This means it may be more humid and higher elevations tend to see afternoon thunderstorms. This is especially true in the Rocky Mountains. Just something to keep in mind.
