Default States Allowing Lane Sharing

I was wondering if anyone has a list or map of States that allow lane sharing. I know it's legal in California but illegal in Nevada. I'm planning a trip across the US with a buddy later this month and this information could save me a ticket.

Do you mean lane sharing or lane splitting, I think the terms are interchangeable. Lane splitting is riding between the traffic lanes and is legal only in CA.

Only CA allows you to split lanes with a car. Most states allow two motorcycles to be in one lane. Check the AMA website or Harley's website, both have an interactive state by state listing of all motorcycle laws.

I have a friend that is a PO and in TX lane splitting is not illegal. It is not defined as legal, but there is not a law specifically. He said it would depend on who saw you doing it. They could charge you with Reckless Driving, but that is subjective anyway.

Now that I think more about it I guess I was interested in both sharing a lane with another bike and splitting a lane between two cars.

Thanks for the tips on the AMA and Harley web sites. I'll check them out.z

California lane splitting: http://www.chp.ca.gov/programs/lanesplitguide.html

As for any other states, I'm not certain. Remember, if there's no law forbidding it, you can legally do it. Not all cops will see eye-to-eye with you on that, however...

Not to be agonistic but I have never understood why one "split" the lanes between other vehicles. It's dangerous enough whether on a bike or cage, much less chancing someone texting or drifting over while talking on the cell or just plain not paying attention. More then likely the time saved is minimal anyway.
