My 76 with Dyna S, and S&S E, kicks right over with 1-2 kicks.

does anyone know what happens when you run a Dyna S with a 3 ohm coil? How does it run? What about once it heats up? Trying to see if that is what causes mine to start to spit and cough and eventually fuel foul the plugs. Putting a new 5 ohm Dyna coil on tomorrow.

The Dyna S was [maybe still is] notorious for failing due to heat.
A low ohm coil causes much more heat...But, I never experienced the symptoms you describe...Betting you either have a Very Poor exhaust system, or [less likely] the advance mechanism needs attention.
FWIW I'm still running one with a [measured] 4 ohm coil....

it has a brand new paughco dual exhaust. I just installed the 5 ohm dyna coil. It starts right up, but it always has. It runs great for at least the first hour, then starts missing and running on one cylinder. I'll see how it does with the new coil. I'll also check out the advance unit as well. I thought about checking that myself, just haven't gotten to it yet. Been through almost the entire bike now since I got it back.
thanks for the tips.

Open or Mufflers...
Symptoms indicate drag pipes!

the advance unit looks good, and seems to be working fine. With the new coil it seems to be running great. I didn't get to go real far, because of the weather. The plugs were kind of bad from when it started running bad the last time before I swapped coils. I picked up a new set of plugs and will install them. Weather is turning real cold, so I don't know when I will get some good miles on it to test it better.

BTW - paughco duals with long fishtails, no baffles.

Without a proper exhaust...you are chasing your [fish] tail.

BTDT
Just carry plugs

I understand that open pipes are not ideal. However, I don't believe that they will make the bike run on one cylinder, spit, cough, and foul the plugs within an hour of riding.

My problem is hopefully corrected with the new (proper type) coil.

I have one here that won't get out of Sight with Drag Pipes on it....
Stock Staggered duals with the crossover and free flowing mufflers...been on the same plugs for a Couple years ..maybe more.
But, All engines are individuals...that's why they need our attention....
