need some flt 5 speed help.

i have a 1980 flt 5 speed. that the output shaft bearing is toast. is it possible to swap in a 5 speed from a newer rubber mount. or. swap all the innards of a newer one into my case? ive read everything from yes as long as its pre 96. to no only pre 1984 will work.

any help would be great.

Your question needs more information to answer it..

You say the bearing is toast... Are you saying the mainshaft is ruined? Otherwise why not just replace the bearing?

Can you use a newer trans? Yes... Depending on the year. If you go evo parts you'll need to match them with the inner primary and clutch basket. Yours is keyed, evo is splined.

I run a 97 trans and 90 primary on my 81 FLT for reference. Build thread with info is just a few posts down

Mike

the 80 is a chain drive and the main shaft is different then the later ones even the ones with a key way ( belt = longer )

as was said replace the bad bearing and even the main shaft if its chewed up - its just nuts and bolts no biggy really

To answer your question, if you are looking for a used trans to drop in without doing any trans work...they changed to belt drive mid year 84, so the only thing that will "bolt-in"without mods would be 80 thru early 84.

Apparently the original poster doesn`t have the consideration to acknowledge that people are trying to help him. This is the second time he has done this, not a good record since he has only asked 2 questions...

Very poor way to use a forum when you are looking for help.

Not a good way to keep people on a forum. By calling them out for no reason. I don't live on the internet. And replying from a phone.I usually.replyto eeverything g once a week. When I'm on the computer atwork. Sucks to use a phone.but. ill do it. To appease the masses. been busy. with work and haven'tbeen able to vet on the computer. and didn't want to update if I didn't have anything .to update on. . But yes I just went ahead and got a rebuilt trans for it. .. And will rebuild the original for a spare.. Just to get it going. Eventually . Ithink iI'll swap the primary and trans to a newer one with oil tank underneath.. Been raining all week andworking outside sucjs.

It is a very common occurrence on the forum, a guy asks a question, gets and answer and goes on his way.

I figured my post might get a response, otherwise I bet it might just as well have gone like the last time you asked for help but never acknowledged.

lots of help on many sites - if you think what he said was calling you out -- well this is not the one for you - i am by no means a post critic but your typing skills suck BTW re read what you wrote - i counted at least a dozen mistakes -- as it sucks for those trying to help as well on a phone or computer
