Default transmission rebuild

I would like to rebuild a 76 transmission and install it in my 79 flh. Are the 2 transmissions interchangeable. Would be nice if I can rebuild the spare one and just swap it over. The only part I would be taking off
the currently installed 79 transmission would be the kicker cover.

also any general advise on rebuilding the trans for someone that doesn't really know much about them but basically wants to learn how it works?

I thought '79 was a Cowpie?? [DairyQueen/Maytag/ Rotary top]
the '76 is a Ratchet top.. Trans can certainly interchange... but most parts do Not..

I'm confident that '79 is the "year" but, As in all things Harley, there is either an "early/late" thing, or just plain exceptions...
especially considering the Bike is 40 years old... almost anything could have happened to it, in that time... Gotta identify what you have..

I don't know if the trans is the original one. It is a 79 frame and I have a rachet top transmission installed and I have a rathet top second transmission on the shelf.

My 79 FXS is a ratchet top. If both are FL trannys, they should swap. If not the gear change lever is different, up vs down.
