I am having the same problem with my 83 shovel it too was sitting for a while so I am going to tear down the carb and make sure everything is clean and take it from there. Thanks guys.
I pulled the old stock carb off put on a S&S shorty and I have cured my cough! Also new S&S intake and new intake gaskets and clamps. Running like a charm.
sonny,
what model is the S&S shorty your using? I'm getting tired of working on the original carb trying to get it right. I've got a '75 FLH & thinking of going with an S&S
for your bike, you'll want to go with an E carb if you want S&S, otherwise you can put a CV carb on, i've heard nothing but good about shovels with the CV carb.
I bought one used on e-bay & put in a 45 low jet & a 190 main. It starts real easy and after it warms up and I take it off choke it stalls. If I give it gas it sprays it out. I'm going to pull the points & see if the advance springs are broke cause it runs hot when I get it going.

If your springs are broken the weights will advance when you ride and never retard, so once you slow the RPMs, the engine will stall out because it is full advance and it normally won't start again. The fact that you fixed a wobbling jet with teflon tape tells me you have other problems you need to deal with. Shovels are tempermental but relatively easy to work on, but they require methodical troubleshooting because you may have more than one issue and one won't show up until the other is fixed. For instance, you should probably repair your jet wobble correctly, the teflon tape may get you home in a jam, but it is not the proper fix and I wouldn't expect good performance from such a repair.
the loose jets was on the original bendix which I replaced with the CV carb which is now spitting the gas out. I think your right about it being advanced (timing) & I'm going to check it after work today. Thanks for the input.
first off, before you go tearing anything up, set you ign timing DEAD ON with a timing light. shovels are very picky about ignition, especially when using the auto advance timing weights. if that doesn't solve your problem, CLEAN YOUR CARB, thoroughly. then spend 4 bucks on a can of BRAKE cleaner and spray your intake seals from the carb side to the plug side with the engine running. if you notice a stumble, fix your intake leaks. If none of the above work, adjust your IDLE jet and mixture screw acording to the plugs. (dark plugs mean rich, white means lean, chocolate brown means perfect.)
