Question Engine cuts in and out at speed

Hey All:

Rode 200+ miles today and the bike ran great, until... At speed 35 to 45 MPH it would momentarily, cut-out, pick-up, cut-out, pick-up, 10 to 12 times consecutive, with constant throttle. If I pulled over, it would idle fine. I'd pull away and it would run great for another mile or two and then do it all over again. It was 91F outside, not sure if that matters. Coil?

Please help...

Got new fuel tanks, lines and filters. Not an issue (I don't believe). The cutting in and out is regular and rythmic. One second cut out, one second cut in, one second cut out, etc. Any other thoughts? I'd think fuel issues would be more irratic???

New gas caps too? Have you tried cracking the vented cap while this is going on yet?

No, I've not tried the gas cap thing yet. They are the original gas caps from the old tanks. Remember, it took over 200 miles of riding for the problem to occur on this particular day. I'd ridden the bike 50 miles or so prior to "the ride" without incident as well. Very strange...

My 1980 FXWG was acting similiarly. I checked all the fuel stuff, replaced the petcock and fuel line, also have a new S&S carb but it still did it. I started checking electrical and found the wire from the battery was broken all but 3 or 4 strands. Sometimes it would run fine and sometime like you describe. Replaced the wire and the starter relay 2 days ago and seems fine now. TIme will tell. Good luck.

Sounds like an intermittent electrical problem.Thosse are the worst kind to troubleshoot.Besides the usual troubleshooting methods that have already been covered,I'll share an old tech trick with you.Put the bike in a dark area, closed garage etc,and shake, pull,or wiggle wires.A loose connection or intermittent short will be visible as a spark in the dark.
