#2 A rivet nut is an alternative.

#3 A well nut might work and they are available in the hardware section of Lowes in the wall of drawers but i would consider it a temporary solution.

*welding has an increased possibility of damage to paint.

 

Remember to protect fender paint with whatever method you use.
The tab from the seat must rest on the shoulders of whatever method you use.
If not then the tab will wobble over time and eat the paint.
That is another reason to avoid welding a nut on the bottom of the fender because the tab will then rest on the paint.
The J & P cycle option, a 1/4 X 20 rivet nut and the well nut should have enough of a shoulder but double check.
Also, make sure the bolt does not extend too deep or you will get an additional rain groove on your tire.

 

Plastic washer on top of the fender. That's what the Sportster came with.

 

Available at Home Depot and many other places. The rubber outside will not damage the fender. They come in many different sizes and because of the rubber, it can be pushed into imperfect holes in the fender. My GF was be using the same one, for over 5 years, to hold on her solo seat. I'm sure that it isn't the strongest repair, but it is quick, easy, cheap, and it works.

 

The J&P Cycles® Seat Hold-Down Screw Repair and Replacement Set that i linked earlier would be a rather clean installation.
If you have significant elongation of the fender hole then a larger washer under the fender and above the fender should add strength and resolve that situation if needed.
Since the repair set is stainless steel it should not be too difficult to locate some washers at ACE Hardware.

 

Garden hose washer works just fine.

 

if the fender hole is wallerd out to much to use the OEM nut and clip(http://www.jpcycles.com/product/8200095) what im suggested would be the way go. A washer is a good idea as well.
