I hear ya... my Fatboy didn't have one, but the Fugly did. I guess I just got used to it.
My new Heritage has a gear/rpm readout that can be selected to display in the odometer. After spending the last 20,000 miles on a Road Glide I thought it would come in handy. I used it the first few days but now I mostly just display the clock. I found I really don't need it. The bike let's me know when it wants me to shift.
