My Sturgis 2009 Trip
Well i have finally had time to take a break from work and get caught up on my forum reading. I thought i would share some of the highlights of my Sturgis trip this year.
1. We traveled a little under 5000 miles and never had to put on the rain gear. we were either off the road before the storms and rain came thru or we waited a couple hours in the morning for the fronts to move thru the areas we were traveling.
We met some great people from NZ. it was their first time at Sturgis and they were a little intimidated with it all, plus driving on the "wrong" side of the road for them. We offered to show them around so they could stay on the "right side of the road". They had such a good time they stayed a couple extra days so we could show them a little more of what Sturgis and the Black Hills offer. We have been going for 15 years now and still haven't been able to see and do all we want.
2. The bike ran flawlessly without any major problems. The only issue was just as i was leaving the Airbox cluster died. my local dealer found one in stock at Brandt H-D in Wabash IN where my trip was taking me thru. If you ever happen thru Wabash IN on route 24 take the time to stop and check out his collection of old and restored H-D's. He has a collection that is amazing and should be in a museum.
3. The Aerocharger turbo system performed flawlessly. I was able to fine tune the fuel map using my wifes new Idea Think pad that fit perfectly in the tour pack taking up little room. I would like to thank Brian at Turbo Connection and Steve McNulty at Dyno Tech in Las Vegas for their patience in answering my questions on tuning the Power commander. When I installed the turbo last year i had Brian make the cruising range on the rich side since i was carrying a little more weight and wind resistance with the fairing than what his map was setup for. I know from experience that in the real world things need tweaking.
I was able to fine tune the map using the seat of the pants Dyno. The bike now gets great mileage and very linear acceleration. I got 39-43 MPG around Sturgis 35-39mpg cruising 60-65 and 28-31mpg running 70-85 all depending on headwinds. If you live near the Las Vegas area and need a professional Dyno tune check out Dyno Tech at the Las Vegas speedway. Steve is a licensed Dyno jet tuner and tunes all makes of bikes and specializes in road race, sport bikes and H-D's. Steve is going to check out my map when he brings my daughter back for a visit this month. My local H-D dealer has a new Dyno Jet and has offered to let Steve check my bike and provide some Dyno training for his mech's. I will post some Dyno sheets when we get it done.
3. I also installed the RICOR Intiminator's in the front end just before i left. This is the best suspension upgrade i have ever made. I have the standard progressive springs but have always had a "clunk" when hitting the raised ribs or frost heaves and wash boarding roads you find in New York after the winter. The drop in Intiminators completely eliminated the "Clunk" which i believe was the forks rebounding against the internal stops. I did not have time to check the fall away so it is what it is. This front end fairly glides over the bumps and irregularities in the road. i don't even feel the harshness thru the handlebars anymore. Even my wife commented she is more comfortable on the bumps. I want to thank Hal64HD for hooking me up with the RICOR Intiminators.
4. I finally found a windshield to push the wind over my wifes head and still be short enough to look thru. WINDVEST has just introduced a recurve windshield for the Roadglide and FLH fairings. The Roadglide comes in 12 and 14 inch in clear, smoke and darksmoke. I put the darksmoke 12 inch on before I left. It was perfect for me but my wife still complained about a little wind buffeting and helmet lift. When i got to Sturgis I visited the WINDVEST booth and ironically he had just came out with a 14 inch version. Doug the owner swapped it out for a minimal charge and now i can still see over the windshield with a couple inches to spare and my wife says the helmet lift and buffeting is gone. I have tried 5 different windshields and this is it. Check it out at WINDVEST.com.
5. I installed the slipper clutch as well and it works great as others have testified to.
6. Last but not least i entered the H-D ride-in show and one first place and $500 again in the VRSC class. second year in a row.

Yea we have been going to Sturgis for 15 years from 94-98 my 2 girls rode in my Ultra with a Friendship III 2 seater sidecar. They virtually grewup going to Sturgis and couldnt wait for our trip every year. even as teenagers they learned a lot from everyone we met and never once did we have a bad incident. Now if you want debauchery there are places to go, dont ask me how i know!!!!!!!!LOL
