I'm doing my 5K service and want to check the suspension adjustment. I do have the compact air compressor which is used to add air to your tires but this, I don't believe can be used to judge the air in the rear air suspension.

The HD Air suspension Pump (part # 34633A) is $50. I'm sorry but I don't want to pay that much just to check and verify air.

What's a safe alternative that I can use?

you can try with your compressor...pinch the line in half, like you do with a garden hose...use the pinch point to add air...careful and good luck...$50.00 for hd pump or much more for a shock...

 

Oh God...DON'T hook an air compressor to your touring air shocks! If you don't have access, or don't want to purchase, use a bike hand pump/gauge...much cheaper.

You connect a compressor to those lines and they'll blow off...you can't pinch it like a garden hose either.

 

You can get the same pump from amazon for $25.

OP, pick up a bicycle pump. Some are nearly the same as the HD pump. Or look on Amazon for a similar pump. Or buy one used like I did. You really need to check and adjust the shock air pressure more than just occasionally. The HD pump is no loss, has the guage and folds up small enough to lay easily in the bottom of the saddlebag.

 

It's worth the money.

I change my shock pressures due to load, type of ride I'm doing etc. 2 minutes and done.

Harley air shocks also have a habit of bleeding down. I check every 500-1K miles.

 

Let's be smart here, an air compressor is not the enemy. If you use one be sure it has an adjustable regulator set to the correct pressure. There's no rocket science involved. I have one with a dial on the gauge that turns its self off when it reaches the preset pressure. I've never blown a line off my shocks, ever.

 

Totally agree. I got the Amazon pump to for half the price. So easy to use on the road and why would anyone ever want to take a chance using an air compressor?? Works flawlessly!
