Question Don't beat me up, Oil Pump upgrade time

Decided to do the oil pump upgrade on my 17 RK, getting real honest here while I know my way around the older iron I have not touched these M8 engines. Know this has been hashed out in here multiple times so bear with me, what all is actually needed besides the later SC pump and inner cam bearing of course? Want to make the shopping list one time. Appreciate the help in advance. While I'm playing, I'll do Stonecolds transfer modification and few other tweaks. Debating on the SC torque cam as I do have the SC tuner but I really don't want to dick around with dyno tuning.

If the 2017 pump Has not caused concern why change it. Most never had an issues with them.

Due to health issues, both my bikes been sitting for a good while. Road king seen some love but a few of the issues with the early ones have come up like the trans to primary oil transfer BS. Did the factory vent to the primary, but I'm seeing signs that didn't stop it. My wariness comes from I haven't run it hard, 95% of my riding is local under 60, a little rattling in the upper end when I start it last few months so time to look at things. Mine's a Sept 2016 build so it's an early one.

Going to doing traveling this summer, it's a peace of mind deal from that standpoint. There are common repetitive issues, I've been watching things across several forums, there's enough to spark me to do the upgrading, made living doing this on older machines for years. Old habits and all that.

You cutting the rods and using adjustables or pulling it all apart? Makes a difference on what you need for parts.

I would start out by contacting Fuel Moto, they even have kits that include [most] parts. Just off the top of my head, here's some things:
  • cam
  • Cam/sprocket thrust washer alignment kit
  • inner cam bearing
  • inner cam bearing tool
  • oil pump
  • New O-Rings for Pump and Port
  • lifters
  • magnetic lifter cuff holders
  • bolt cutters (to remove stock pushrods)
  • adjustable pushrods
  • cam chest cover gasket
  • exhaust gaskets
  • tuner

I'm tooled up well enough and can make anything if needed, going to do that runout tool fueling sells, got a box of odd indicators, just need to do a little measuring on the hole dimensions. It has the the Screaming Eagle pro street tuner, Ca version of course, that was part of the purchase deal. I just need to source the cables to play with it.

This is probably the best "How to" article on M8's I've come across, sets out what you need and walks you through the whole process.

Enjoy

I would be careful with the twin power made pumps. They advertise that they are the latest design but they are not. The latest design has the o-ring seal on the back. I had ordered one of these from D. Kirk but when I received it, it was the old design with no seal. They put me on the phone with twin power engineer and he agreed they were not producing the upgraded pump at that time. I ended up using the OEM but the bike is 2022 anyway.

The Harley version does not come with the end plate, hs to be ordered seperataly. At least it did a few months ago.

The FM kits are inclusive and are a good value. I got the Woods 22XE for my 128 build and could not be happier, I had the whole thing torn apart but would have been happy with the cam kit by its self. Order some cam sproket shims too, FM should nake these part of the kits or recoomend them anyway. My only big tip to you would be adjsut the pushrods BEFORE you button up the cam chest. Use the timing marks to get it right but make sure to pump up the lifters 1st. My hands are big and eye sight poor so I found adjusting the push rods to be a pain in the ***, so have patience.

Good luck

You will find the job to be straight forward, I suggest using the sprocket retention kit (instead of reusing the old bolts), P/N 25566-06.

I`m not a fan of adjustable pushrods, so I removed the rocker boxes, a bit more time required, but no big deal.

You will have no trouble with this project.
