Overhaul '18 touring fork - my experience
8 years and 32k....long overdue. I do my race bike every season, and it's pretty complicated with valving and shim stacks. I feel pretty bad I let it go this long, but that just means a pump and dump isn't enough.
Not many surprises so far. I've got the left leg apart and clean. Had to buy a 19mm allen socket (for the cap), a long 12mm allen socket (the bottom bolt), and a seal driver. I had seal drivers for the Showa on my GSXR, but it didn't go to 49mm. Local dealer had the overhaul kits in stock, so I'm just waiting on the call that it's ready for pickup, and that'll probably be tomorrow. I'm using Maxima's V-twin oil. I use Maxima in the race bike, and it performs pretty well.
Of the few surprises, the fork tube is permanently assembled and difficult to clean. If I were doing this as an annual thing, I'd probably drain it, fill it enough to submerge the damper, and pump it. I'd likely repeat that a couple times just to flush out what I could. The other concern is going to be reassembly. The manual says "the cap is under pressure". Talk about an understatement. The first one got away from me. The bottom of the cap is flat, so trying to compress this down and then turning enough to get a thread started is not going to be easy. The good surprise is that the fairing didn't have to come off. I was really dreading that part.
Overall, I'd say difficulty is a 5/10.

Following along... My Indy installed Legends monotubes many years back (abt 60K miles ago?), but i have been thinking about opening them up to replace the little bit of oil and the seals. General good hygiene.
Interested in your experience.
BTW: Fairing removal ain't that bad - and gets easier with repeated experience.
