Default Vibration Issue, I cannot figure it out, PLEASE HELP!!

I have a 2003 Dyna Low Rider 15000 miles on it. It has a ridiculous amount of vibration between 2000-3000rpms, when I pull the clutch while riding between those rpms it smooths out immediately. I can feel the vibration through the footpegs and the handlebars. I replaced the motor mounts with OEM ones from HD, I followed the HD service manual for my year and model. Support the motor, remove old motor mounts, one at a time, replace engine bolts, torque down, put the isolater bolts in but not tightened down. Made sure the bike was level, ran the bike for 5-10seconds, torqued down the isolater bolts. Still vibrating. I checked the vehicle alignment. I put good accurate digital levels on the seat pan and both rotors and everything was within half a degree of each other, HD says within a degree is fine.
again loosened isolater bolts, still within half a degree, rear wheel was off the ground as the service manual states, ran bike for 5-10 second, torqued bolts down, same thing, did it again ran the bike for 15-20 seconds and revved it up to 2500 rpm’s, torqued it down, same thing. Still. Vibrating. I’m at a loss. About at the point where I’m going to sell it or trade it in for something new. I literally cannot enjoy riding because of it. If any one has some insight and can please help that’d be awesome. Thank you

First thing I would check are the tires out of balance.

Are you getting the vibration while riding the bike or sitting on it in the driveway? These bikes tend to shake a lot sitting still but will smooth out at speed.

Another thing to consider is the new motor mounts themselves. I put new ones on my 95 Dyna last fall and it vibrates quite a bit more than I wouldve imagined too.

Have you checked the sterring head? Do a fall away test and adjust if needed. Tires could be an issue, as mentioned earlier. Good luck, these things can be a real PITA to figure out.

What bars are you running? What about footpegs? Some bars and pegs will transmit vibration a lot differently than others.

So you owned it sense new and it just started the vibes?

It has the stock exhaust on it? Have you checked to make sure it's tight?

Welcome to the HDFORUM. There was a recent thread on here with a lot of suggestions for a low rpm vibration.

I don't see it but Advance search may show it.

Max had some and others has some explanations on centering mounts.

If I come across it, I will paste a short cut in this thread.

The details you point out sure seem to point to an engine vibration. You said riding. Goes away clutch pulled in.

It can't be tires, because he said it smooths right out when he pulls in the clutch. He didn't say he's owned it since new.

Here's a thought, although it's probably not what you're hoping to hear. I had a Dyna Super Glide Custom. Bought brand new. Vibrated like crazy right around 65 mph. Drove me nuts. Hated it. Checked tire balance, checked engine mounts. Was doing longer rides, so I traded it in on a new Road Glide Special. Vibration went away.

Later I was having a casual coffee conversation with an experienced tech, and I mentioned that Dynas vibrate. His reply: "Yup, they sure do."

I suspect crank runout. If I were you, I'd arrange to test this with a dial indicator and mount. They are available most anywhere like S&S and other good suppliers. You can remove the right engine cam cover to access the timing side of the crank. Anything close to .010 total indicated runout (TIR) could be your problem. Harley says that up to .012 is OK, but I don't think so.
When I heard that Harley had changed to a press fit crank, I could see these problems coming. I have my old HD flywheel truing jig that I used many years ago to true cranks for my friends. I could get them down to .002 without trouble.

The tires are good and balanced. The rear one was done recently. It vibrates while riding between 2000-3000rpms. Anything over 75mph it’s smooth. But around town I’m mostly running in between 2000-3000 rpms which is where the majority of my riding is done, to and from work. At idle, sitting at a stop light or driveway it’s fine.
It has stock footpegs, thrashin handlebars.
i hadn’t considered crank run out but I remember reading they switched the crank bearings in 2001 or 2002 I believe which caused run out from heat to the roller bearings. I will check that. I do need to check the fall away and see.
Also I’ve been heavily considering trading it in and getting a Lowrider ST lol I know that’ll fix the vibration 😂 I will order a crank run out tool and check fall away this weekend. I have not owned this bike since new. The exhaust is aftermarket and is tight. But it has done it since I bought it. I used to own a 2013 Wide Glide that eventually did the same thing. I changed the motor mounts on that and did vehicle alignment procedure and it smoothed out.

We need more details.
  • Is this a bike you just bought and it's always behaved that way?
  • Is this a bike you've owned for a min and it just started vibrating?
  • Is the vibration the same sitting in your driveway revving as it is rolling down the road at the same RPM?

Well, you need to pull the cam plate to get the reading. This means removing the rocker covers, pushrods, and lifters to get it out..

Being an 03, it still has the better pressed crank in it..
