Question Can I change the 1157 socket in front turn signal housing?

I've been through it with turn signals on my 2020 SGS. I initially installed custom dynamics led's with gaskets and lenses (all around) but then noticed some cracking/crazing in my front lenses and in comparing those smoke custom dynamic lenses to my stock oem amber lenses I noticed the custom dynamic lenses were like 1/2 the thickness of oem and not nearly as robust so apparently I made the mistake of counseling with the guy at the parts & service counter who recommended I just buy the HD smoke lenses but when I noticed no gaskets in the package he said they're not required just snap them in place slot down. Okay...simple enough but a year later?...Not Okay.

My front left turn signal went to amber only and all the time and when I popped the lense off an abundance of water came flowing out and upon removal of the socket?...despite having slimed them with dielectric grease the female socket inside the turn signal housing was encrusted with corrosion and the same held true for my front right turn signal socket.

Problem: I blew all the water out of both front turn signal bullet housings with compressed air and dried everything then used a small wire brush to clean the socket contacts which worked out swell for the right turn signal housing socket but the left turn signal housing socket?...one of the lead droplet contacts is still there but the other side corroded away so much I can see the copper wire core so what I believe is happening is the male socket is only making contact on one side that actuates the amber light however the white light is mia due to a lack of connectivity because of the severely corroded away contact point.

Options/Questions:

1: I'm thinking if I simply dremel away some lead on the high contact so they both make contact I might luck out but seems a real sketchy option or?...

2: I'm wondering if there's a way I can simply pull the turn signal housing and replace that 1157 socket with a new one.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Shared experiences?

Pic is so y'all can see that my bike has been equipped with the running lights option that my turn signal housings are mounted too...

How are the existing sockets held in the housing ?

FWIW I added o-rings to my aftermarket and OE bullet style signal housings
Primarily for a "snugger" fit but also against water
May not apply to the ones you have

I'm about to pull it and find out because the one thing I don't wanna do is buy an entire turn signal assy over a $2 socket.

I began to loosen the turn signal housing bolt but punked out because whoever did the install must’ve used 1/2 a tube of loctite so then began looking a little closer and it appears that the socket and pressed in reflective housing is of one piece construction so?….

I’m going to try dremeling the high contact down to where they’re both even and hope for the best…

Yes, you can replace just the turn signal "socket" assembly. it comes with a de-pinned wire. You will need to run the wire de-pinned, the add the connector once it is in place. It plugs into another connector by the upper fork tube, under the fairing. You should be able to reach that connector with the fairing on, but the spot lamps bracket removed.

You need to look at the 2020 Ultra Limited parts pic to see what you are dealing with since you added the spot lamps. The part number is #68904-00. It is available at your dealer for $39.37.

I found one on eBay to show you what it looks like. The eBay one is used, but only $4.00 less than new..

I hope this info helps...

You may be able to replace the socket as hattitude points out but the inside of that housing looks pretty subpar in the photo. I think I'd be springing for a new pair of complete units if it were me.

As a "shade tree" fix, see if you can push the wires to lift that contact plate above the socket and put a dab of solder on the corroded contact. An 1156 socket would give only a running light OR a turn signal, but not both, unless you spliced into the rear signal wiring. That being said, my only experience is on Road Kings that need add-on dongles to convert the rear turn signals into running lights and brake lights by varying the voltage to the single filament.

There is also the chance that the spring under the contact plate has corroded into dust, so even refreshing the contact with solder wouldn't work. Good luck with whatever you try.
