Touring on a softail . Who’s done it
I admit I’ve been spoiled by my Street Glide . It’s got about 40,000 miles and made a lot of memories and miles on it which I still have it but its time to change it up and make it more exciting
my 2004 Duce is still a baby with 17,000 miles but I want to up that this year : I’m not wanting to put saddle bags , luggage racks on if. I do have a small swing arm bag but that’s it.
anyone just thrown a pair of socks undies and a toothbrush in Their coat or small bag and hit the road? . I’m just thinking out loud on a late night

I tour on my Heritage a bit. Granted, this is not a bare-bones Softail. Made 3 road trips last year. South loop: 1st night St. Louis, 2nd night Memphis, 3rd night west of Nashville after a loop thru MS, 4th night home after a 500+ mile rode. Lake Michigan loop: up thru Michigan, across the UP, down through Wisconsin, back thru Chicago and home. West loop: out to the Rockies in Colorado and back. Close to 6k miles of road trips. Not bad for an old man of 69.

Pretty close. Add an extra shirt and pair of pants. Wash a set of clothes in the motel sink at night, hang off bike to dry the next day. Google maps w/ avoid highways turned on, weather app, local diners, and Motel 6 all day long. Surprising how little you really need. If you do happen to need something, It's not like you are riding behind Lewis and Clarke.

I've done over 200,000 miles in Reaper's saddle. Been through 44 of the 48 contiguous US states, and 3 provinces up here. I've done numerous month+/6000+ - 10,000+ mile long summer road trips. Properly set up, with good, properly adjusted, suspension components (in my case: Progressive 422 w/RAP in the rear, and Progressive monotube cartridges up front), and a good seat (in my case a Mustang Extra Wide Regal Duke), makes a Softail a fine touring bike.
In the early days, I strapped luggage to the sissy bar, etc... these days, i have hard bags and a Tour Pak on quick release hardware, so it take a couple of minutes to transform Reaper into Baggertail mode. For shorter trips, I still strap a bag to the sissybar, and go.
Here she is in her daily configuration:
And here she is in Baggertail mode:
In either config, she's good for all day riding comfortably. I've put many, many 500+ miles days in her saddle, and plenty of 600+, 700+, 800+ mile days, and some 900+ and 1000+ days, too. None of which beat me up. The longer days were tiring just because of the length of time.
Cheers!
