The right bag is actually notched on the underside and not even close to the exhaust - picture angle just made it look close - no burn marks and I have 12000 miles on my bike, probably 7000 with bags mounted.

It is a 15min install to mount the pillion and touring system. It is even easier to remove, so why leave it on the bike when not carrying a passenger or luggage. The system works great and I have traveled several thousand miles with it.

thanks for those photos, i also have a touring rack, so that must make the saddlebag bracket stick out further, does that require extra packing at the foot peg end of things?

There are three different mounting hardware for the bracket.
1. Just saddlebag bracket
2. Saddlebag bracket and trick seat
3. Saddlebag bracket and luggage struts

Each kit is a different length bolt and spacers.

No, The saddle bags stick out the same in either configuration. There are spacers to pad out if you are not using the tour rack.
