I've switched back and forth between the quiet baffles and the stock baffles several times on the staggered pipes. The stock baffles are very easy to remove and replace. The quiet ones on the other hand are a PITA. Sometimes I wish I could make up my mind. The fiberglass wrap on the quiet baffles get caught going in and coming out. They are a very tight fit. I think the stock ones are staying in now as I have damaged the wrap on the quiet baffles enough that they would need new wrapping to be of any use........I guess my mind has made up for me.[sm=smiley4.gif]

They killed off my low end and sound like $hit IMHO.

I'm going to ask a stupid question... I have the quiet baffles (not in the bike now) but they have no glass wrap..
What does this wrap do?

 

I tool the baffles out on my previous set of V&H shortshots and it was loud but lost the low end torque. Is there a difference in how it performs based on a carb or efi motors? I wouldn't want them if I am gonna lose too much low end.

I swapped out the baffles from my SE 16 ga. exhaust and put in Thundermonsters. They sound awesome and I get many compliments. No loss of power (88B stock with stage 1 & K&N Filter), and I then installed the SERT and tuned it to get rid of popping on decel/accel as well as minor surging, and the bike runs like a champ. YMMV, but I have had a good experience.

The fiberglass wrap baffles the sound. Just like in the old glass pack mufflers for cars. The V&H Quiet baffles come with a layer of fiberglass wrapped around the outside. Are you sure they're the Quiet baffles? If they are a straight through design with louvres on the inside they are the standard baffles.

 

I have an 03 softail with V&H Big Radius exhaust.
I've taken the baffles in an out a couple of times, you need to take off the heat sheilds
and remove the baffle screw on the back side of the exhaust pipe. You may need to use a vise
grip and tap on the baffle to get it out, but they will come out fairly easy.
I ran my pipes with the baffles in and the installed Thundermosters.
No loss of power or perfromance, sounds louder.
The thundermonsters are very easy to install.
Need to drill a 1/4 in hole in the exhaust pipe 4 inches up from the end, slide the baffle in
with the screw/washer (you'll see what I'm taking about when you see the baffle) end towards
the rear of the exhaust.
I would never go back to the V&H baffle to quite for me.

 

03 Softail are you running both the thundermonsters & VH baffles together?

 

I noticed when I set up my V&H BigShotStaggereds with the Fuelpak that the mode settings for fuel/air are different for the stock baffels that come with the pipe vs the quiet baffels that sell for $29 each. I set mine up with the stock baffels which are a straight through design with a swirl cutout on the sides.

The optional quiet baffels are plugged at one end and allow the gasses to cycle through a fiberglass coating and through holes cut into the baffel. Lots more back pressure so an adjustment to your Fuel/Air mix will always be required to obtain the best performance.
I decided to live with the noise and now like it. The quiet baffels only change the sound by 2-6 DB depending who you talk to and thats not much of a change for the added back pressure you pick up from the more restricted pipe.

I have EFI so those with carb machines will have to change the jetting to obtain top performance when changing out baffels.

Very easy to install, personnel at thundermonster very nice to deal with.
