Question Things to look for in a used 09 Nightster

Hi all! Looking at buying an 09 Nightster. 17k on it. Vance and Hines Side shots. Any known problems I should look for when I go to look at the bike? Any info would be great.

dealer or private? you can pin the dealer down on the battery drain, electrical/fuse/circuit breaker(corrosion). you can search for more and/or go to

http://xlforum.net

private wants to sell it and doesn't care about feed back

I have an 07 that for the most part has been trouble free. Not sure if it is just mine or normal for this bike, but every so often I get an erratic engine speed; Only happens after the bike is warm (or hot) and shut off for less than 20 minutes then restarted. It will start on high idle (about 35mph if I pop the clutch). I shut it off, twist the throttle wide open-release, restart and all is normal again. This has been an intermittent issue for about 4 years now.

That aside, things to look for:

~signs of being dropped: broken chipped lights/mirrors/turn signalas, bar end dent in tank, grip ends tore up, etc.
~neglect: sludgy oil, rust/corrosion
~Mods: you mentioned pipes, did they change AC, turner or run it lean and burn the valves?
~original equipment: tires, battery? all due for a change and a good negotiation point ($300 tires/150 battery)
~electrics: all lights work, speedo work, ecm throwing any codes?

All I can think of at this hour, but should be enough to get you started.

Good Luck.

10,000 seems like an awful lot. I personally will never buy another 2009 model year of ANY Harley. I will also never buy another Harley from a dealer. I have seen at least 5 HDs (including my own 2009 Nighster) with the paint falling off. No sheet metal damage, its just falling off of the rear fender. They did something wrong with some of the paint in this year. Of course, no one knows anything, so I'm stuck putting out the money if I want to get it fixed. Color/model seems not to matter. Mine is mirage orange pearl and black. Ive seen 3 black bikes, a silver denim, and my orange one. All 2009 model years. Paint is falling off. Be very careful unless youre planning to re-paint the tins.
