I was leaning towards dawn or brake cleaner. Figured I'd start a thread to see what others have used.

Easiest way?

Volunteer to load the dishwasher. Don't tell the wife you put the filter element in there.

I'd use Dawn and water if it was me. They use it to clean up oiled birds, so it must at least be a non toxic product. I've used Dawn and water on my KN airfilter, and it works fine as far as I can tell.

I just changed the oil and cleaned the permanent filter on my bike last week. When I pulled it off the bike, I held it upside down above the drain pan, and 95% of the oil came out that way within 30 seconds. I then wiped off the top of the filter with a shop towel, pulled the filter out...still no oil on my hands.

Dumped the spring out onto a shop towel.

Used part of a spray can of carb cleaner to clean the filter and the housing. Set it in front of a fan for a few minutes while I change the primary fluid.

Still no oil on my hands. I did get a bit of carb cleaner on my hands.

Put it back together and installed it.

It absolutely adds 10 minutes to the oil changing process. To me, it is worth the benefits.

Will try and remember to take a video next time I do one...that's a good idea.

I can`t figure out the so called benefits...

Unscrew wix 51215, toss in trash. Install new wix 51215.

Less than 5 bucks each from fleetfilter.com.

In 100,000miles I use 20 of these filters (5k mile oil change interval).

Cost: 100 bucks, no carburetor, brake cleaner, or solvent needed.

That would mean the break even point for cost would be somewhere around 170,000 miles, if you don`t count the cost of cleaning materials...

Just think how convienent it would be to have a reusable filter on every vehicle you own.....

The benefits are listed in this link-

http://www.dkcustomproducts.com/OUTL...DK-OCOF-AB.htm

If you don't have the time/desire to read the link above, Hot Bike Mag sums it up pretty well-

Quote from Hot Bike Magazine:

"Besides doing a superior job of cleaning and cooling the oil, independent testers doing back-to-back dyno comparisons of these reusable oil filters and an ordinary disposable, charted as much as an 8-horsepower bump along with 10 more lb-ft of torque."
