First bike, used or new?

Exactly! You may discover you don't even like the Sportster or any HD's after all... You may decide on something simpler like a dual sport or the likes. You can thrash them up real good and they'll still look decent.

If you're planning on upgrading in a couple years or so, then I would go used, otherwise I would go new. Seems like the '14 price might be the deal breaker.
Few improvements on the '14+ Sporties to consider. Improved brake system like larger rotors, stainless steel braided lines, better calipers. And the electrical is all improved. Better speedo with a tach and gear indicator.
I was in your shoes when I took the new rider course. I had a good deal on a new Custom and I went for it. I now have an RK, but I still have my Custom and it's still fun to ride. Planning on keeping for awhile.

I know this won't be popular on an HD forum but did you consider buying a less expensive Metric bike to learn, dent, decide on first. You might not like riding, you never know? Why not make a small investment first then decide on what Harley you want.
There are several Bikes (Metric or Harley) that have very few miles on them, why do you think that is? Some people decide that riding isn't for them even though they thought it was.
EFI or Carb, who cares just have fun and ride. I've owned both and never had an issue with either one. Although I love just starting my EFI bike and driving off, I always had to wait forever for my carb bike to warm up.
