Gunk in Gas Tank

Gunk in Gas Tank
Long story, 2012 a friend of mine bought a new XL1200C, rode with the guy once and said never again.
Fast forward to the present, bike is in my backyard, bent clutch lever, broken brake lever, bad battery, dent in rear fender, bent rear brake lever, shifter bent, beat up heat shield. Now you know why I won't ride with this guy, he's very prone to the laws of gravity.
The poor bike has only 2600 miles on it. he gave the bike to his son, I work with his son and he asked me to repair it. the biggest problem I've run across is the fuel tank. several years back someone wanted to ride the bike, it was out of gas, they grabed a can of gas not realizing it was full of water and gas, it never got drained out of fuel tank. It has very little rust but the fuel sock totaly gone, rubber insulator around fuel pump mostly gone and i guess with the heat in summer and the combination of gas and water must have had some kind of reaction. the whole inside of tank has like a tar caked on it.
I guess I'll take the tank to a radiator shop, let them boil the tank, and I don't give a rats *** about the paint, the kid can just rattle can the tank. And then I've got to rebuild the fuel pump assembly.
This was going to be a Question on the tank but has turned into more of a rant of why someone would go out and spend 13 K for a toy and the treat it like crap.

We're here to listen, whenever you need us!
As for the bike, some of those parts can be had secondhand on Ebay, where I buy much of my stuff (from the USA, despite living in the UK), albeit with a little patience, waiting for suitable prices. It may also be worth checking the Classifieds here on HDF.

Got the bike revived, radiator shop took care of tank, got a after market fuel pump, cleaned all lines. runs good now, changed oil and filter, primary, performed service on bike . did drive it a bit, but not too far, as no tags, inspection, or ins. ran ok, for something that has sat around for several years.
Now to get my trailer back from my son and deliver bike. Neighbors will be happy as I did have too many drinks Sat. and performed a pretty good burn out.
