Default New/Old Member with Stage1 Questions

Hello all, I am Cocky from the Softail section. I currently have a 13 Deluxe and just recently bought a mostly stock 2006 XL1200C on the cheap, that I hope my princess will ride. It runs hotter than my deluxe and the plugs are very gray. It seems to be way lean, but runs ok with the stock mufflers that someone ran a rod down through(sounds pretty bad). I have searched for 3 days and have found very little on the subject of converting to a Stage1 for a 06 sportster. This bike has a carb and I did find that a 45 slow and 180(stock I think) jets is what I need for the carb. I can not find anything that amounts to anything on the air kit. HD has the #29782-07 air kit, but that seems to be for 2007 EFI bikes and later. I would like to do this on the cheap including Rush slipons from ebay(unless someone has a better solution). I did find a picture that someone cut two large round holes in the back of the stock plastic backing plate and used a K&N filter. I dont mind this route, but would like something a little more substantial. Please tell me how to stage1 this thing up on the cheap(or at any price for that matter). Thanks all. Pics to follow when all cleaned up.

Here is a link on doing the carb.

I used an S&S air cleaner. Good flow and modified it to vent the crankcase to atmosphere instead of the carb. Looks good also.

You'll be happy with the Rush slipons. Went with the 1.75 baffle to keep the torque.

Gray plugs is a sign of good fuel mixture. Post up a picture. The ground strap and base ring are what to look at AFIK.

45/180 should be okay, maybe jump to a 190 mainjet. Since all the carbs are the same 1991-2006, any aftermarket aircleaner should mount right up. Perhaps the 2004-2006 are different due to the rubbermounted engine so be aware of that possibility.

I'm running a 45 and 185 on my carbed 2005 XL1200R with an S&S AC and SE II slip-ons with Thunder Baffles. Runs and sounds great.
