how do i check the oil on a 2007 spaortster ? on the side cover there is a chrome push button that rises up but i dont want to break anything

Push that button down and it will pop up. Give it a twist and it comes out and you will see the dipstick. Per the manual, check it when the bike is on the side stand.

I suggest you pick up a Service Manual for it.

Check after a ride, when engine is hot, and all the oil is in the tank.

If you go to the HD website and click on the owners tab you will see a link to owners manuals under the Maintain your bike heading. Enter your vin and you can access your manual online

On the basis that it is not good practice to not run an engine unless you are going to get it up to proper running temperature it is always advisable to check the oil after you have got the engine warmed up.
The manual describes checking the oil with a cold engine by just running it for a couple of minutes to get the oil back into the oil tank.
I have no idea how long it takes for the oil to drain out of the tank so as soon as you switch off check the oil then but get the bike on level ground for best results.
I have found it feels like a vacuum forms and it is harder to remove the dipstick/cover when the engine is hot to when it is cold.
