883 XLH 1990 Alternator Magnets

Hi mates, I have a 883 XLH Sportster from 1990, and my big issue is the magnets from alternator, I had loose magnets but none were broken. To buy another alternator rotor what is with the clutch system, in Romania(i'm, from Romania) is very expensive, more than 600$.
I wan to re-glue the magnets, but I don't know the magnets position(pole).
If somebody re-glue the magnets, or know the magnets pole position, please tell me.

Thanks a lot.

$600 seems like a good deal. :icon_eek:

I'm not even sure what sort of "glue" you would use to re-bed them. They should only go in one way though. But if one came loose when riding, it could really tear up your stator and clutch I would think.

How did you realize they were loose? Were you taking out the stator and had a magnet fall out of the clutch basket?

Here the stator is $112.00, The rotor clutch shell is $511.99. Never tried to glue them in. Good luck.

Are they all broken loose? I had one that drive spline was stripped. I decided the magnets may come in handy. Tried to break one out and it was like bulletproof till I struck the outer shell. They literally exploded out of there.

I guess that warning about "no sharp blows" on the rotor is there for a reason.

I am pretty sure that means on OD. As long as you lock up the drive, a impact wrench will not hurt it. I hit them with a 3/4 drive one.

The magnets in there should be standard ceramic variety, and they are super fragile. A smack with a screwdriver could crack them. I don't see how they could come loose without breaking unless it happened in a static position. Did all of them come loose, or do you have any still in position? A two part epoxy that is impervious to gas/oil (and high temp) will be required, and should work well to fix them in position. All surfaces must be in pristine condition for bonding. I believe each magnet should be fixed in equal spacing position as such that each "set" repels the other.

I would be very concerned about a repair of this part. If if came loose at speed, it could lockup motor and cause a wreck.
