Default Fuel tank 2002 883 sportster

Good morning. I just bought a 2002 883 sportster. It has the small peanut fuel tank on it. Does anyone know what size it is and if there are any options to put a larger tank on it? Some research shows a 2.5 gallon tank and somewhere else I read it's a 3.3 gallon tank. Perhaps a 4.5 gallon tank off a later model can fit this bike. Let me know if anyone has any ideas on this. Thanks, Scott Jones.

My 1991 with peanut tank holds 2.25 gallons. I think there are a couple sizes of "peanut" tanks over the years, but don't hold me to that.

Yes, you can fit aftermarket or Harley tanks, probably 1991-2003 works, although my 1991 does not use grommets and later tanks do, not sure if that matters as the mounting holes are likely the same on the frame. Oh, and the earliest tanks (91-92) have petcock on the right, then they went to the left side. Beware if you have a Mikuni HSR carburetor, as the right side petcock tank won't fit. This is what's stopped me from trying the HSR carb on my bike.

Good luck.

I have a 3.3 gallon king peanut on my 2003. It had an aftermarket 4.2 gallon fatbob tank on it prior but I didn't care for the look.

King Peanut and his loyal goobers. Sounds like a Planters nut commercial at Christmas.

Pretty sure all 2002 and 2003 Sportsters came with 3.3 gal tanks as standard. The larger 4.5 gal tanks came in 2004 with upgraded frames.

That's only 1.8 gallons here in the UK.

I wonder if my 2.25 tank is the same as the 2.1, considering the fuel pump inside the 2.1 gallon tank takes up some volume that the petcock on mine does not?
