2006 sportster 883 Won’t Stay Running
Hey Guys I Have A 2006 Sportster 883 And Can’t Get Her To Stay Running.
- Full battery and did load test
-Checked Petcock. Hold vacuum and seems to working
-removed fuel line and did a little cleaning on it
- removed carb and did thorough inspection, removed and cleaned jets, cleaned all parts. and even added a idle and fuel mix screw and started it out with 2 turns out.
- swapped intake seals
So need some help she will start and not stay on. Also seems to be only wanting to start with choke out. Any help would gladly appreciate it. Thank you guys.

You need to make sure it's not fuel. Could be at that age, the petcock screen is blocked.
Can you carefully keep it running misting the opening in the carburetor .
Be real careful, just a mist. Too much and it will spit back.
Pull a vacuum on petcock with a hand vacuum pump (you going to need that anyway to occasional check it as a maintenance and bleeding brakes).
Remove line from carburetor and make sure you get a steady stream if you haven't already done that. Leave it on a few minutes to make sure it's not leaking down.
And of course double check your getting fuel with it cranking.
Does motor appear to have good compression. You can borrow a screw in tester from Autozone. Be sure to wot carburetor when testing. If it's low, and you have a compressor, a leak down will accurately pin point problem.
They have that also as a free loaner tool.

So I have pulled the line before and cranked it and the fuel flow, I had it sent into a container. I have sprayed a little starting fluid in it and it seems to want to stay on. But I have not checked for compression. I have set vacuum on the Petcock and it holds vacuum. I should remove the Petcock and check the strainer, that I haven’t looked into.

My 04 is eye candy now but has 50,000 on it and runs like new.
Only time it ever failed was that. On the way to work I filled up. Was acting a little odd when I parked it.
That night, on the way home, it shut off at a red light. I realized after restarting it, unless I cracked throttle, it would not idle.
I did the typical check everthing. Same drill. No idle. Driving the cage about a week later, gas station was pulling up his unground tank.
A drain and refill of premium unleaded fuel fixed the old girl good as new.
Lot of people condemn ethanol. But 10% is fine and keeps the tank dry from any reasonable amout of water . All we have had since the 80s.
