Default fast idle help

2007 1200 sporty stage one with a tune. Bike was running well, next time it started it was a fast idle ?? Pulled air filter and checked for air leaks . All was good ,still fast idle would guess 2000rpm being a custom no tach. Checked bars side to side with no change. What next never had a FI bike???

Check and clean your IAC (Idle Air Controller) which handles the cold idle.

These fuel injected Sportsters are 'interesting'. My 08 1200 will idle fast on start-up which seems normal, sometimes it will idle down soon after start-up, sometimes no. When approaching a stop sign, the engine speed will be too high til I come to a complete stop: then the idle will drop down. I've added a tune to it, to make it run 'better', and my mpg is less than the advertised rate. Before the tune, the bike ran below par, especially in the off-idle range, where much of our riding is done. I will put up with the lower mpg in order to have an engine that runs more to my liking.

You sure you don’t have a throttle cable sticking?

There is tables of data in the EFI system that are for adding fuel based on temperature so on those cold mornings the engine is likely to run at a higher rpm.

An engine that doesn't fall quickly to idle when the throttle is closed and the clutch is pulled I call a hanging idle and can be an indication of a lean mixture.

When I start my 2011 Iron 883 from cold it starts idling at 2000 rpm, as the motor warms up the idle starts to drop, after about two minutes it has a regular 1000 rpm tick over. As far as I'm aware that is normal for EFI Sportster models, my Iron gives 52 mpg (UK gallon, not USA gallon).

I live in a hilly region of the UK, so I'm using the lower gears regularly which can lower the fuel economy somewhat.

As stated above, a high idle on a hot motor could be due to a damaged or badly routed throttle cable or a lean fuel / air mixture.

When I let go of the throttle I get a reassuring click from the throttle body as it snaps shut.

It could be the idle cable isn't adjusted properly. Whichever side you put the steering HD say turn to full lock and ensure the throttle still fully closes.
